  • Ep. 15: What can this Teach Me

    Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 15 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. In today's episode we are joined by Kurt Lindley, Owner of Be More Learning & Development, South African born, Yorkshire bred, dad of 1, Kurt is a learning and development specialist with over 20 years’ experience in the field of learning and development. Kurt has worked within Olympic sport and the UK Sport domain, mentoring elite coaches, developing leaders and supporting coach educators.

In this episode, we talk about,

    • The concept of being a Polymath and why Kurt resonates with the idea of being a person of wide knowledge or learning.
    • Kurt shares the idea that if you’re going to worry about something, leave worrying until 5 minutes before the thing you’re worrying about.
    • Kurt kindly shares the tragic loss of his wife passing away 5 years ago and the impact that has had on his outlook on life, and the unexpected position he now finds himself in as a single parent.
    • Kurt shares the idea of finding “Subtle Supporters” in order for your thinking to be challenged whilst at the same time having a support network around you.
    • We ask ourselves the question, How do we separate what we think from how we feel? And why this is an important question to ask and live into.
    • We discuss how children appear to have what may be considered natural confidence, and that over time the external environment and their experience erodes that natural confidence.
    • We explore the impact of confidence within the organisation setting and how essential it is for leaders to be confident in saying, “I don't know”, whilst maintaining belief in the teams ability to create the best way forward.
    • Kurt shares his belief in sulking, having a day in your pajamas but only for a self agreed amount of time.
    • We discuss the idea of creating a virtual personal boardroom, made up of people you would love to have guiding and advising you.
    • Finally Kurt shares the idea of having just enough confidence to say hello, and how impactful that can be in developing and improving your confidence.

Kurt's energy is infectious and authentic, his passion for human learning and development shines throughout this conversation. Kurt challenges us to think about meaning and context, and to really question what we believe is important about confidence. We’re provided with thought provoking ideas and the reality that all humans at some point have battled with their confidence. There’s an abundance of warmth and compassion that comes from Kurt and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it.

  • Ep. 14: The Power of the Stories You Tell Yourself

    Hey Everyone,

In today's episode we have the pleasure of being joined by Adam's former coach, fellow podcaster and soon to be published author, Robbie Swale. Robbie trained as a coach with The Coaching School in London and later with many other masters of supporting people to fulfil their potential. Robbie has provided coaching, training and facilitation for, among others: Swiss Re, The University of Edinburgh, BetterUp, and King’s College London. Robbie predominantly works one-on-one with leaders and entrepreneurs who are grappling with the complexity of the modern world.

In this episode, we talk about,

    • How Robbie considers himself to be a bit of an introvert and someone who has always been considered quite a shy person.
    • Robbie shares his thoughts on his current relationship with confidence and how he chooses NOT to think about it as something to worry about.
    • We open up a conversation about what the opposite of confidence is, and why that’s an important question to understand.
    • Robbie talks about the concept of resistance, and how everyone suffers from it at some point in their lives.
    • Robbie shares his belief that there’s a process to confidence, a number of steps that include, inspiration, courage, and vulnerability.
    • We discuss how using things you’re already good at can support the growth of confidence.
    • Robbie talks about the POWER of the stories we tell ourselves and how they can impact our ability to be confident.
    • Robbie shares one of his favourite rules for life in general taken from the book, The Art of Possibility.
    • We discuss how the creative process, basically creating something from nothing, can be a huge developer of confidence.
    • As we move towards the end of the conversation Robbie talks about how he has had to work out how to enjoy parties as an introvert by becoming more curious.

Robbie has a wonderful desire to share and explore his own thinking throughout this episode. As we’re sure you will agree there is a depth to Robbies thinking which will hopefully prompt you to look a little deeper into yourself and how you think about confidence. As always we finish by asking our guest what you can do to improve your own relationship with confidence.

  • Ep. 13: The story so far

    Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 13 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. As always our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we take a pause on welcoming any guests to the show. Instead we take an opportunity to discuss the journey we've been on since creating the podcast and some of our own key leanings and observations.

What started as a random idea in a well known coffee shop drive thru when we were still allowed to meet without a face mask and hug each other, has now become a globally listened to podcast that has been downloaded more than 1200 times.

We've been fortunate enough to welcome an unbelievably diverse and thought provoking set of guests. All of which who have shared openly and generously about their experiences and challenges with confidence.

It's been a wonderful start to our podcasting experience, and yet we still feel as though we've so much more to cover. We hope you enjoy the slightly different format of this episode. We also want to thank each and every one of you who have taken the time to listen, provide feedback, share and download the podcast.

We would love you to get in touch and tell us what questions you want answering and how we can serve you through this podcast. If you want to get in touch please visit either of our websites where you'll find our contact details.

If you enjoy the podcast, please SUBSCRIBE to the show and leave a review. Even better, please feel free to share with anyone you feel would value from the information we provide.

  • Ep. 12: Always have an open mind

    Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 12 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we have the pleasure of being joined by Jack Revell. Jack has an 11 year background in the entertainment industry which has included modelling, commercial acting, podcasting, presenting and more recently being an IG Liver (if that's even a thing).

Jack has a real sense of confidence whilst at the same time has a very humble and grateful demeanour. We explore lots during this episode, from being in an industry where people are compared to each other everyday in order to get paid, to not getting a job based on the way you look!

    In this episode,

    • Jack’s journey of modelling since the age of 18 working for some of the most well known brands on the planet!
    • Jack shares his thoughts on knowing what he’s NOT good at, and why this is something worthy of consideration for all of us.
    • Jack shares his challenges and journey with the way his body looks, and how he has been impacted by his thoughts on body image.
    • Jack shares how losing his father at the age of seven caused him to age beyond his years.
    • How NOT being booked for work affected Jack’s confidence, and the peaks and troughs that come from working in an industry where you very literally may not get work because your face doesn't fit.
    • Interestingly Jack shares that he has always been a confident person, however he’s more confident on set than off it. Even though he has no formal training in modelling.
    • We discuss the importance of stripping back what’s not important and doing more of what you actually enjoy.
    • As someone who is expected to spend an amount of time on social media, Jack shares what some may perceive to be a bizarre activity, deleting followers and the reason that sits behind that action.
    • As the conversation comes to an end Jack shares his belief that you almost have to have a certain amount of confidence to open up about confidence, albeit you only need to have a little bit.

It’s obvious that Jack has a deep sense of wanting to develop and grow as a human being. Another of the ingredients Kerry and I are collecting for the Secret Sauce of Confidence. The world in which Jack has operated and been a part of appears to have provided numerous opportunities to develop and grow his confidence. However, what’s important to take away is that Jack has stepped into, and taken those opportunities each and every time they have been presented to him.

  • Ep. 11: Failure doesn't exist

    Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 11 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we have another first on the show, we welcome back our first set of returning guests. Due to the phenomenal conversation we had with this pair in episode 9 we felt we had to continue the conversation on another episode. We therefore welcome back brothers Mark and Rob Jarram.

Just in case you haven't listened to episode 9, here's a recap of who Mark and Rob are. Mark is currently the Head Coach of Loughborough University Men's Basketball, Assistant Coach of Leicester Riders, Assistant Coach of Great Britain U20 Men's Basketball Team, and a Loughborough University Coach Developer.

Rob has played an instrumental role as a PE Specialist working on the development of a programme called Sport Education, which led to him being asked to speak at a number of conferences to share his work. During his 10 years at Loughborough College creating a number of high profile elite athlete programmes, Rob was recognised for his outstanding work and contribution to the college and students alike.

    In this episode,

    • Mark and Rob share how their parents went out of their way to provide as many opportunities as possible, and how looking back this created a certain sense of confidence.
    • How their confidence grew when they realised the standards that had been instilled were good ones, and how meeting the expectations being set gave them confidence.
    • We jump into the idea that females may perceive more threat than males and therefore perceive more fear, and how this can affect confidence.
    • We discuss the idea that if you want to improve confidence stop talking about confidence!
    • What happens if you choose to fail knowing the outcome, and how this can be beneficial to your confidence. And how this links to the fantastic work of Carol Dweck on Growth vs fixed mindset.
    • We start to ask ourselves questions such as, Why would you want to be more confident? What impact would that provide? What are the top 3 things that are hampering your human potential?
    • As we move toward the end of the show we remind ourselves of the wonderful phrase coined by the amazing Brene Brown, “Fucking First Time” and how this relates to confidence.

Each and every time we open the doors to discuss this topic something new walks right on in. There’s also a sense of some common themes beginning to materialise. Environment, family, preparation, and action to mention just a few.

  • Ep. 10: Never let yourself feel stuck

    Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode ten of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we have the pleasure of being joined by Emma Taylor. Born in Nova Scotia Canada, Emma currently works full time as a Project Engineering Specialist for Irving Shipbuilding, and is also a member of the Canadian Women’s National Rugby team. Emma has played rugby for over 10 years, playing at the club, university, provincial and national level across a number of cities and countries. Emma generously, and openly shares her journey and battle with her mental health, and also the impact those challenges have had on her status as a female role model.

    In this episode,

    • Emma shares with us her journey from giving everything, but not getting where she wanted, and the impact that had on her mental well being.
    • Emma shares how being one of a small number of women working in a male dominated industry has affected her confidence.
    • How Emma has had to battle with herself to go to the gym not because of the training, but because of her lack of confidence to walk into the gym.
    • We open up a conversation about body IMAGE, rather than body CONFIDENCE. And how Emma has managed her relationship with her body, being specifically mindful about the language she chooses to use regarding her body.
    • We talk about the potential relationship between anxiety and confidence, and that Emma believes there is a very clear link between the two things.
    • Emma talks to us about how she has to continually manage her anxiety, and exactly how she does that.
    • Emma shares the reasons as to why her sister inspires her so much, and the special relationship they have which has been an integral part of Emma's life.
    • We spoke about the importance of recognising you have anxiety in order to take control of it, and that anxiety can make you feel you’re not good at things you’re great at.
    • Emma talks about how she felt like she had to be a role model, whilst at the same time feeling like she couldn’t be if she suffered from anxiety.
    • We have a wonderful conversation about how you can be confident even though you may still be managing anxiety.

This is a really special episode, Emma is softly spoken, kind and very humble to say the least. As we continue our journey to explore this topic, it never ceases to amaze us how confidence has literally impacted everyone, regardless of your status, experience, profession or background. It plays a part in all our lives, and yet still isn’t something that is being talked about enough, or better yet, something that is being understood in order to enhance and enrich our experience of life.

  • Ep. 9: Confidence doesn't exist without fear

    Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode nine of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we have a first on the show, not only do we have two guests joining us, but the guests are brothers. Mark and Rob both have a great deal of experience when it comes to working with the topic of confidence.

    • We dive straight into asking each of the brothers to share their definitions of confidence and how those definitions have changed over time.
    • Rob shares his thoughts on how confidence is a very complex part of being a human and how he believes it can fluctuate.
    • The conversation moves into discussing how powerful confidence can be whilst at the same time is something that has a very real sense of fragility about it.
    • Mark beautifully articulates how understanding what confidence MEANS to somebody is crucial in order to be able help them.
    • We take a brief journey into emotional intelligence, and the relevance that understanding your emotions has on confidence.
    • We discuss how protecting your joy has a HUGE part to play in creating more confidence and how comparison is the biggest thief of joy.
    • We look at something we’ve not covered before, and that’s the potential to be overconfident caused by people constantly telling you you’re great even when you’re not!
    • Rob and Mark talk us through how it’s common for people to give their power away which leads to giving their confidence away, even before an event has happened.
    • We look at how overthinking about a situation, building it up to be much more than it is, can actually deconstruct our confidence.

What an episode! There is so much wonderful content and dialogue for you to think about in this episode. Kerry and I were literally fizzing with energy for days after. The dynamic and energy of having four coach's all with different experiences, beliefs and understanding was fantastic.

We explored a lot, so much so that Kerry and I have invited Mark and Rob back for a part two.

    As always please Enjoy!

  • Ep. 8: Nobody has it perfect

    Hey Everyone,

In today's episode we have the pleasure of being joined by a lady who has quite literally revolutionized the fitness industry. CEO and founder of her company FORTË, Lauren Foundos is the epitome of what it is to be an entrepreneur. Lauren’s journey from being a two-time all-American field hockey player, to spending a decade working on Wall Street, to creating a global tech business with no tech knowledge, is a phenomenal story. Lauren is humble, down to earth and straight to the point when it comes to business, her thoughts and insights are inspirational to say the least.

In this episode, we talk about,

    • Lauren shares with us her incredible journey from working on Wall Street for 10 years to deciding to create a tech business with no tech knowledge.
    • We have a conversation about the importance of exercise on mental health and how FORTË has changed the lives of countless individuals by offering an alternative to exercising in a physical class environment.
    • Lauren shares her experiences of being a female CEO and the challenges she faced with her concept, which back in 2015 many believed to be a ridiculous idea.
    • Lauren shares her experience and opinions on the importance of having a support network around yourself. People you can not only trust, but that are willing to tell you the truth.
    • We explore the idea that confidence is actually a result of taking action, rather than something that you necessarily are, or constantly have.
    • That if you’re not fortunate enough to have a supportive family, there is always the option to create and grow a friend family, that not only can support you but you can support.
    • We discuss that nothing is VERY easy at first, and that it’s going to be messy. Lauren shares her thoughts about needing to be patient with yourself, and that nobody has it perfectly figured out.
    • How Lauren believes that everyone has a superpower, and that hers is her ability to relate to people.
    • As move me towards the end of the episode Lauren recaps her belief that knowing you’re always going to be OK, and it’s never the end of the world is a MUST in order to have deep inner confidence.

Lauren’s passion and drive appears to be almost effortless and has played an obvious role in her success. Couple this with her tenacious mindset to succeed and it’s no surprise that FORTË is now a global leader in the streaming of fitness classes across the globe. What’s beautiful about today’s episode is how grateful and honest Lauren is about the support she has had along the way, and that without that support, she really wouldn’t be where she is now. Honest, direct, funny, hard-working and someone who I can call a beautiful friend, enjoy today’s episode with Lauren Foundos.

  • Ep. 7: Know what your jam is

    Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode seven of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we are joined by the incredibly inspiring Ironman triathlete Claire Shea Simonds. Claire has spent the last 25 years chasing her goal of completing an Ironman event in under 10 hours. Arguably one of the toughest single day events anywhere on the planet, Claire is one of a small handful of individuals to not just take on this event, but complete it as a 40 something whilst also maintaining a demanding full time job!

    In this episode,

    • Claire shares how she went from crying and hiding in portaloos before her first Ironman race to standing calmly and confident on the starting line.
    • Her journey to qualifying 6 times to compete at the world championships of Ironman, the famous Kona event.
    • Claire kindly tells us why at Ironman events they paint numbers on your arms and legs, not for the faint hearted!
    • We discuss whether or not confidence is a skill rather than something that you just are.
    • Claire discusses how NOT meeting her pre race milestones impacts her confidence and how she has to manage that very carefully.
    • Claire’s fascinating ability to endure and suffer pain and keep on going regardless of how much pain her body is experiencing.
    • Claire shares her thoughts on confidence being very personal to each individual.
    • How Claire’s confidence can be easily undermined by others if she doesn’t manage her interactions well.
    • We have a great conversation about Claire’s strategies in order for her to perform at her best.
    • Claire beautifully shares that her confidence has a certain fragility to it, and that her awareness of it’s fragility has developed over time and in certain situations.
    • The lessons Claire has learned from competing in Ironman support her ability to be confident in her day job.
    • How even now Claire still has challenges with social engagements and interactions, and how deeply bothered she is about what people think.
    • We have a great conversation about how to construct confidence for any given situation and controlling the controllable.

Claire has a beautiful energy and warmth, her relentless pursuit of achieving her goal after 25 years is inspiring to say the least. Although a small, petite, well spoken lady, she clearly has something special inside which allows her to endure suffering far more than many of us can begin to imagine. Listening to her it seems almost effortless, and as if it’s normal to have the tenacity, resilience and confidence to do what she does. This is a wonderful conversation with very tangible content for you to take away and implement.

  • Ep 6: Ability to have faith in yourself

    Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode six of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we are joined by former Royal Marine Commando Craig Williamson. Craig has served in multiple hostile environments including Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. Craig shares his extraordinary journey from military life to now being owner and Head Coach of CW1 Crossfit in Crewe. Now a business owner, Craig shares his challenges with being visible on social media and even being on the podcast!

In this episode we talk about,

    • Craigs journey from leaving school to enrolling in the military, to completing the grueling Royal Marine Commando process and being awarded the prestigious Green Beret.
    • We discuss how confidence appears to grow with experience and time, and how having an ability to have faith in yourself is an essential part of developing confidence.
    • How having to put a condom on a banana in front of 250 people gave him a unique sense of confidence for speaking in front of large audiences from that point on.
    • We explore how Craig’s confidence has developed and changed from his time in the military to becoming a business owner working with civilians.
    • Craig talks about never saying no to an opportunity even if it’s something you don't feel confident in doing or even want to do.
    • We discuss how knock backs, if not managed well can have a significant impact on your confidence moving forward.
    • How fear of failure has played a prominent role in Craigs mindset and confidence.
    • How through SAS selection Craig learned that the most important person in his life is himself.
    • Craig shares his thoughts that confidence is underpinned by success and achievements.
    • We have a fascinating conversation about how certain soldiers had an almost legendary status and how that impacted his perception of those individuals without even meeting them.
    • We also touch on the introduction of elite female soldiers and elite female Crossfit athletes, and how we are evolving as humans.

Throughout this episode Craig very humbly talks about his achievements and himself. It’s intriguing to listen to how comfortable Craig is talking about operating in a war zone or protecting high profile clients but how challenging it’s been to become a business owner and working with the general public. This episode really demonstrates how putting yourself in an uncomfortable position creates personal growth and ultimately more confidence.

    Enjoy!
