Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam episodes

  • 21: Jungle Fever (1991), Summer of Sam (1999) and Da 5 Bloods (2020)

    Text Matt & Adam!

We discuss a few Spike Lee joints. We both agree that Jungle Fever feels more relevant now than ever. Amazing performances and some of Spike Lee's signature style, which includes an unflattering portrayal of Italians. Matt watched Summer of Sam two days ago and he can barely remember it. That tells you all you need to know. Both of us thought Da 5 Bloods had a lot of promise, but maybe Spike needs an editor.

  • 20: Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019)

    Text Matt & Adam!

It's all Safdie Brothers all the time. We both liked the manic energy of bad people making bad decisions in Good Time. The Safdie's kept pushing the accelerator further and further. Robert Pattinson excelled as a low-life you can't help but root for, and hey, who doesn't like a movie with Necro. Uncut Gems (35:25) hits a lot of the same notes, and they are played to perfection, but it just wasn't our song. The performances, again, are stellar, but the noise of the movie was distracting and, well, annoying. We expect big things from the next Safdie flick.

  • 19: Night of the Hunter (1955) and Get Out (2017)

    Text Matt & Adam!

Part 2 of Actor-directorial debut week. Night of the Hunter is really a monster movie that features an electrifying performance from Robert Mitchum. Why did Laughton only direct one movie? He had such a great eye for framing scenes. Get Out pays homage to Lovecraft and classic horror with a healthy dose of relevant social commentary. And don't forget the humor brought by our man Rod! Gazebos - don't trust 'em.

  • 18: Ordinary People (1980) and The Mid 90s (2018)

    Text Matt & Adam!

We discuss directorial debuts by actors. Robert Redford absolutely knocks it out of the park with one of Matt's favorite movies. Adam thinks it's a weird favorite, but Matt explains why this one touches him so much. Mid 90s is not earth-shattering, but it is a very competent debut from writer/director Jonah Hill. He captures a brief era with love for his subjects that will warm any millennial's heart.

  • 17: American Graffiti and Kicking and Screaming (1995)

    Text Matt & Adam!

George Lucas wrote a movie without robots. Oh wait, the acting...American Graffiti sets the standard for one wild night high school movies. We were annoyed at first, but you eventually love these "kids". A product of the times but also a must-see. Kicking and Screaming is equally annoying, but also endearing. A lot of intellectual discussions about mundane things, which is a look into the future of media. The characters are limited by their own potential to be more than mediocre (while being totally mediocre) -- so 90's.

  • 16: The Verdict (1982) and Find Me Guilty (2006)

    Text Matt & Adam!

We are back in the courtroom with two movies from the pod's favorite director - Sidney Lumet. The Verdict showcases Paul Newman as an actor. I think he's gonna be a star. Find Me Guilty similarly relies on Vin Diesel, and he surprises with an engaging performance (and he doesn't even drive a car into a helicopter).

  • 15: Cube (1997) and Tape (2001)

    Text Matt & Adam!

We finish up bottle movie week with the horror/sci-fi cult classic Cube. Surprisingly, Matt liked it (after the first few minutes). We both liked its broader message. Tape also gets off to a slow start, but it ultimately delivers with amazing performances, especially from Uma Thurman, and ponders the stories we tell ourselves.

  • Bonus 4: 12 Angry Men (1957) and Talk Radio (1988)

    Text Matt & Adam!

We hit that bottle by discussing two of Matt's favorite bottle movies (a movie that takes place in mostly one location). We both think 12 Angry Men is still relevant for a variety of reasons. Talk Radio also feels current, but we have some issues with the execution.

  • 14: All About Eve (1950) and Lady Bird (2017)

    Text Matt & Adam!

We decide that we have been too dude-centric, so we discuss some movies about women that have really impressed us. All about Eve is full of snappy dialogue and great performances. A well-crafted drama about drama people. Lady Bird is funny, full of heart, and offers a realistic depiction of growing up. At the end, Matt briefly reveals his own past as an actor.

  • Bonus 3: Quintet (1979) and Gemini Man (2019)

    Text Matt & Adam!

The Quintet Curse! We talk about bad movies from good directors, but they must have heard us. Matt's mic has an audio problem starting at 16:53. You have to listen closely to hear him, but I swear that he said a bunch of really smart and entertaining stuff.
