Text Matt & Adam!
Hittin' the road in a foreign land.
Matt and Adam discuss Alfonso Couaron's road movie about cherishing small moments in life. Oh yeah, and there's tons of sex. TONS. Matt suddenly does not mind the horniness (0:29). Then they shift to discuss the overly heavy A Taxi Driver, about the Gwangju Massacre. Both guys had high hopes, but the characters felt a little flat. They wanted a little more humor and heart (36:34).
Apologies for the audio issues. Thanks for listening!

Men dressed like women and women dressed like men.
Matt and Adam were impressed how Billy Wilder captured Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot. They appreciated the comedy from a technical perspective, but it was not laugh out loud funny. The gangsters, the band, and even the goofy millionaire were all pitch perfect. Matt hated Just One of the Guys. Adam admits that the acting is flat, but it is well-written if not well-delivered. For Adam, it is a highly-quotable 80's classic that deserves to be seen, but for Matt, it is just overly horny and too cheesy to make a point.
Next up: Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001) (available on Netflix) and A Taxi Driver (2017) (available on Hulu and Amazon Prime video).

Dinner with friends.
We both liked the absurd satire of the Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. We fumble through a few French names with the best of intentions to compliment the actors and director. Matt recounts a funny William Friedkin story about casting the French Connection. Then he breaks down what the film has to say. Adam has a Seinfeld hot take. Melvin Goes to Dinner features a charming dinner conversation among likable, albeit self-absorbed people, who are very chill about infidelity. There are a few unexpected moments that merit a second viewing. We disagree about the ending.

The worst movies we have paid to see.
Love at First Bite has the worst opening 20 minutes of any movie, mostly because of George Hamilton. This "comedy" took a decent premise and never figured out exactly what it was making fun of. It desperately needed a laugh track, and we desperately needed a drink. Matt couldn't figure out what he liked least - the racism, the misogyny, or the acting. The Gambler is a remake of a James Caan film starring Mark Wahlberg, which is where it went wrong. There is a good movie here somewhere. Maybe Matt Damon could have saved it. At least we had John Goodman for a few minutes. Adam explains the Goodman-Shore theorem.
Next week: Let's go to dinner. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) (available on Amazon Prime video) and Melvin Goes to Dinner (2003) (available on Netflix).

Old friends getting together.
Matt has a weird feeling about seeing The Big Chill again. Is it the unlikeable yuppies? The cavalier attitude toward sex/fertilization/adultery? The ending? The fact that this is a movie about people realizing that they do not like each other? Maybe it's all of the above. Adam thought it did a good job slowly unrolling the relationship between the characters. They both agree that old republicans are not allowed to listen to Motown. Intimate Strangers features a great cast that feels like old friends. The banter and camera work made us feel like a fly on the wall. Matt left the movie with sadness (and hunger). Adam focused on the comedy and performances (41:30).

Matt offers more revenge picks after Adam made him watch 4 H.P. Lovecraft adaptations.
High and Low is a forward thinking crime drama. We dissect it in two parts 1) Stage play 2) precursor to Law & Order. Kurosawa frames the action in each scene with meticulous precision. We have a lot to praise. Somehow we manage not to do a samurai impression (1:35). Sorcerer opens with a bang, or four bangs. When action shifts to grimy jungle life, we are still captivated by the leads. Who knew truck driving could be so suspenseful? (46:12).

No real theme this week except that Matt wanted Adam to watch two movies that he loves. Out of the Past features a great performance by Robert Mitchum - come on, who wears a trench coat better? But, he has nothing on those duplicitous dames. A young Kirk Douglas is a gangster with a no kill policy. Who is the better hardboiled dick - Mitchum or Bogart? A Face in the Crowd is the most relevant movie you have never heard of. Andy Griffith, yes Mr. Mayberry, plays a maniacal populist enamored by the love of his supporters while secretly disliking them. Nope, not familiar at all. With a mix of humor and darkness, this movie says a lot about modern America.

Part 2 of the Lovecraft pods.
Dagon is a pretty straightforward zombie-style movie about a cult of Sea God worshippers who are slowly turning into fish people. We did not expect the happy ending. Matt was impressed by the direction of Lovecraft veteran Stuart Gordon. Color out of Space was a bit more divisive. Matt did not really see the point, but Adam liked the vibe and the look of it. One thing both can agree on - we need more Nic Cage!

Lovecraft Extended Universe part 1
We dive into part one of 5 decades of Lovecraft movies. The Dunwich Horror has bad writing, directing, acting, and a ton of plot holes, but Matt liked it. Good in a bad way is not quite accurate. It gets props alone for the Stockwell mustache. Adam wanted more of the backstory – what is actually happening? Re-animator is a legit good movie. Matt appreciated the cult classic from the start. This movie did a lot with a little. Adam had some recasting thoughts for both.

Oh! Yeah! I wanna riot! -- Riot/protest movies this week.
We start with the Strawberry Statement*, which maybe makes more sense when you are a stoned 16-year-old at a midnight show (cough, Matt). Despite some flaws, it still had some solid moments. The ending is memorable, and there is some recognition of the movement's absurdity. Then we get a little darker with La Haine. All three main actors deliver knockout performances. Every single scene will grab your attention. How did we never see this in the 90s?
