We're slowing it down this week. Our theme is "weird work romance" with an international flair. From Germany, In the Aisles (In den gangen) is smart, quiet and very rewarding in the end, while South Korea's Vertigo (버티고) is okay, but not so smart or quiet and would have been better/darker if the director had cut the last 20 minutes.
Next up, "Revenge" with South Korea's Oldboy (올드보이) (2003) and A Promising Young Woman (2020).

We continue our Civil Rights theme with the winner of the1968 Academy Award for Best Picture, In the Heat of the Night (1967) and the Lyndon Johnson biopic, All the Way (2015). Matt feels like the former is dated while Adam never really bought in and both thought the latter is worth seeing solely for Bryan Cranston's performance as LBJ. Rod Steiger deservedly won Best Actor for "Heat".
Next up, Weird Work Romance is the theme with Germany's "In the Aisles" (2018) and South Korea's "Veritgo" (2019).

In honor of Black History Month, our theme is civil rights films. Mississippi Burning (1988) is based on the true story of the murder of 3 civil rights activists in 1964 and how the FBI solved the case. It seemed a little dated and could have used more from the Black experience, but it still holds up as a good historical piece. HBO's Judas and the Black Messiah (2021) is the story about the last few months of the life of Fred Hampton, the leader of Chicago's Black Panthers. An excellent film that we both wished was longer. If Daniel Kaluuya is not nominated for Best Actor, it will be a travesty.
Next show, more Black History Month with In the Heat of the Night (1967) and All the Way (2016).

We have "writers working it out" as our theme. Unintentionally, both movies were about writers working it out in swimming pools. Adam and Matt both agree Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard" is a masterpiece, with Gloria Swanson giving the performance of a lifetime. "Swimming Pool" is a slow paced mystery that will have you thinking in the end. Definitely have to watch again.
Next we honor Black History Month with "Mississippi Burning" (1988) and "Judas and the Black Messiah"(2021).

We look to one of our peers for guidance. Movies Roger Ebert hated is our theme and our thumbs our firmly pointing down with these two. "Caligula" may be the worst movie Matt has ever seen and "Bucket List", with all it has going for it, is a trite and bland mass of mediocrity.

Does boxing make the best subject for sports movies? Matt and Adam move on from rom-coms to a more familiar world of violence and mayhem with Robert De Niro's Oscar winning performance in "Raging Bull", and the next to last installment of the Rocky Balboa's saga, "Creed". Adam admonishes Matt for never seeing Rocky's II-XVIII and they both wonder if there really are dirt bike motorcycle gangs in Philadelphia.
Next episode: Movies that Roger Ebert hated with Caligula (1979) and The Bucket List (2007).

This week we opted to get away from our usual pseudo-masculine fare and picked a couple of Rom Coms. Adam watched the classic "The Philadelphia Story" (1940) and Matt got to see South Korea's "My Sassy Girl" (2001). Sassy may not be the correct translation. Both were a blast, but one was much more Rom than Com and the other, yeah you guessed it.
Next podcast: Boxing with Raging Bull (1980) and Creed (2015).

Old friends come to town.
Matt and Adam talk about two revenge thrillers. Robert Mitchum terrorizes everyone with a bit of charm in Cape Fear. That is one menacing mosey. In The Gift, Jason Bateman does his Bateman thing as a grown up high school bully. His victim grew up too.
Next week: Romantic comedies - The Philadelphia Story (1940) and My Sassy Girl (2002).

Cops chasing serial killers.
In Citizen X, the Soviet government is not very helpful in finding the nation's first serial killer. It could be one of HBO's best. Then it's off to Korea to catch another (somewhat less methodical) killer in the Gangster, the Cop and the Devil. The good guys and bad guys team up, and yup you guessed it, the lines get blurred. Luckily for us, Ma Dong-seok punches the hell out of everyone.
Next week: A visit from an old friend (?) - Cape Fear (1962) and The Gift (2015).

Terrifying as a child; silly as an adult.
Matt and Adam revisit movies that caused them childhood trauma. House on Haunted Hill relies on atmosphere instead of frivolous details, like acting, a script, etc. Mind your step, there's a vat of acid. Dreamscape (38:19) could be a good movie, but it was just kind of boring. Snake Man is still pretty creepy.
Next show: Cops hunting killers. Citizen X (1995) and The Cop, the Gangster and the Devil (악인전) (2019)

Wait, you haven’t seen that? Each week, two friends recommend movies to each other based on a common theme.
