Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam episodes

  • 51: Get Carter (1971) and The Fury of a Patient Man (Tarde para la ira) (2016)

    Text Matt & Adam!

    Revenge!

Matt and Adam discuss (and are slightly confused by) the gritty British crime classic Get Carter. It's a world where dames are birds, everyone smokes, the gangsters are polite,  and no one pronounces their h’s. The Fury of a Patient Man is a Netflix hidden gem that features a man losing his patience pretty quickly, a simmering plot and great kill scenes.

The audio is not great because we are doing it remotely. Thanks for bearing with us for a few more weeks.

Next show: Movies that terrified us as kids but are silly as adults: House on Haunted Hill (1959) and Dreamscape (1984)

  • 50: 50th Show Retrospective Top 5 Lists

    Text Matt & Adam!

Matt and Adam look back on the year of movies they watched/recommended and choose their top 5 lists. They also discuss what the other guy should have chosen on his list, the pod's Mount Rushmore and the stinkers.

We are so appreciative of every listener. Thanks so much for listening to our nonsense for this year! Cheers to more inappropriate comments and mispronounced names in 2021!

  • 49: The 400 Blows (Les quatre cents coups) (1959) and The Squid and the Whale (2005)

    Text Matt & Adam!

This week's theme is neglected kids (or bad parenting).

Matt and Adam slightly disagree about the 400 Blows. Matt hails it as groundbreaking and Truffaut as a rebellious genius. Adam does not quite get it and wanted the kid to be worse.  The ending is open for interpretation. The guys agree that the Squid and the Whale is Baumbach at his finest - a tight film with biting humor. Jeff Daniels is a beast. It's the little things. "How's your grip, my brotha?"

Next week: A retrospective - we choose the top 5 recommendations from the other guy.

  • 48: Slap Shot (1977) and The Sandlot (1993)

    Text Matt & Adam!

    Sports comedies.

Slap Shot exists as a kind of comedy time capsule, but that's the appeal. The Hanson brothers. Inappropriate jokes. Boobs. This movie has it all. Adam asks, who is the modern day Paul Newman? The Sandlot is about a bunch of kids in the 60's who love baseball and worship the New York Yankees. Matt, who grew up in the 60's, loves baseball and worships the Yankees, had never seen it. The Sandlot loves baseball. Matt loves baseball. And I think Matt loves The Sandlot.

    Thanks for listening!

  • 47: Tampopo (1985) and Big Night (1996)

    Text Matt & Adam!

Struggling restaurants aka deliciousness on screen.

Who knew ramen was so complicated? Tampopo teaches Matt and Adam about food, life, love, and slurping. And they learn  what it really means to show affection to a piece of pork. Big Night is like a heaping dish of pasta -  everyone loves it, and it is probably better enjoyed with a bottle of red (or a bottle of white...it all depends on your....okay, I'll stop).  Man, I'm hungry.

    Thanks for listening!

  • 46: Brother from Another Planet (1984) and Sorry to Bother You (2018)

    Text Matt & Adam!

    Movies with a Message.

Matt and Adam break down the vignettes in Brother from Another Planet.  John Sayles has fun in showing  us America's nonsense from an outsider's perspective. In Sorry to Bother You, every detail feels poured over, which results in a modern masterpiece of absurdity.  Watch it again and you'll find something new.

  • 45: Motel Hell (1980) and Dead Live (aka Braindead) (1992)

    Text Matt & Adam!

    Awfully good horror movies.

Motel Hell is in on the joke, which makes it so delightful. Did you say chainsaw fight? You already had me at sausages made from hippies. Dead Alive might be the goriest movie of all time...not to mention the humor and love story. But seriously, who had to clean it all up?

  • 44: The Beast of War (1988) and Fury (2014)

    Text Matt & Adam!

    Tank Movies!

Who knew tank movies was its own genre? The Beast of War is a hidden gem of a war movie (shout out to Nick) that will eliminate any of your romantic notions about being in a tank battalion.  The C-list actors hold their own. Matt and Adam disagree about the importance of the subplot. Fury has Brad Pitt doing his Brad Pitt thing. He is a movie star in a Hollywood war movie. Pitt kills it, but the movie lacks a certain something that The Beast of War has.

    "Tanks" for the recommendation, Nick.

  • 43: The Orphanage (2007) and The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

    Text Matt & Adam!

    Horror movies this week.

Matt and Adam discuss the smart and creepy haunted house film The Orphanage. Big on atmosphere but light on blood. Matt liked the minimal gore; Adam did not like the kid.  The Cabin in the Woods is a meta-horror movie that would please any fan of the genre. Much funnier than Matt expected. Adam compares Bradley Whitford to Percy Harvin.

     Thanks for listening!

  • 42: Medium Cool (1969), Steal This Movie (2000), and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

    Text Matt & Adam!

    The 1968 Democratic Convention.

Three for the Road this week.  Matt and Adam discuss the reality-bending Medium Cool. It had a lot of promise until it slowed down and became a normal movie. For Steal This Movie, the guys liked the actors, the script and the direction, but it somehow felt flat. Matt might have a thing for Janeane Garofalo (don't we all?). Sorkin's Trial of the Chicago 7 did not disappoint.  Adam has a bold statement on Michael Keaton. Why don't we get movies like this anymore? Who was the better Hoffman - Vincent D'Onofrio or Sacha Baron Cohen?

Next pod: Horror movies. The Orphanage (2007)(on Amazon Prime for $) and A Cabin in the Woods (2011) (on Hulu for $).

About Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam

From the publisher's feed

Wait, you haven’t seen that? Each week, two friends recommend movies to each other based on a common theme.
