Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam episodes

  • 81: Breaking Away (1979) and Adventureland (2009)

    Text Matt & Adam!

It doesn't feel like summer here in #BurlingtonVT so we watched a couple summer movies to get those vibes, particularly vibes about wondering "What's next?" Breaking Away (1979) is the kind of movie that simply does not get made any more. Wholesome, sex-less, drug-free teens. Adventureland (2009) showcases the sweeter side of the Superbad director, Greg Mottola. And of course, we get the Full Eisenberg Experience.

Next show: Weird, dystopian buildings (yes, we're reaching): Delicatessen (1991) and High Rise (2015).

  • 80: Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Bronson (2008)

    Text Matt & Adam!

Prison is the theme  this week. "Cool Hand Luke" (1967) is a classic Paul Newman film about a lovable ne'er do well's life in a Florida chain gang prison that Adam loved from the opening scene. "Luke" lost to "In the Heat of the Night" for Best Picture, and both M&A think it was a travesty of justice. "Bronson" (2008) is the story of Charles Bronson, Britain's most famous and violent prisoner. Matt thought there wasn't enough back story and the violence was a little repetitious, but thinks the uniqueness of the screenplay and Tom Hardy's performance make the film worth watching.  #prisonfilms #prisonmovies #tomhardy #paulnewman

Next, Summer is on our minds with Breaking Away (1979) and Adventure Land (2009).

  • 79: If.... (1968) and Bananas (1971)

    Text Matt & Adam!

Revolution is in the air. Matt had never heard of the British film "If...." (1968) until Adam had him watch it. He loved it. A young Malcom McDowell stars as the lead "revolutionary" in an all boys prep school as he and a couple friends decide that school should be out, permanently. "If" is refreshingly unique and a little weird. Check it out. Woody Allen's "Bananas" (1971) was one of Matt's favorite films from high school, but now he thinks it doesn't hold up well. Adam thought it was a bit uneven. (PSA: Woody Allen is a creep) #madeinvermont #malcolmcdowell #if.... #clockworkorange #woodyallen #bananas #VT

Prison is our next theme, with "Cool Hand Luke" (1967) and "Bronson" (2008).

  • 78: 1776 (1972) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

    Text Matt & Adam!

It's Patriotic films this week. Adam has one question, "Is one of these really a patriotic movie?". "1776" (1:35)  definitely fits into that category. A retelling of the month leading up the Declaration of Independence. Both Matt and Adam liked the dialog, but felt most of the songs were less than memorable. "Born on the Fourth of July" (31:56) was the second of Oliver Stone's Viet Nam Trilogy and it does not disappoint. Adam liked it more than Matt (Platoon fan), but both felt it was a "tour de force" for lead actor Tom Cruse. #patrioticmovies #patriotism #USA #4thofJuly #1776 #tomcruise #revolutionmovies #revolution

Next, Revolution is in the air with "If" (1968) and Woody Allen's "Bananas" (1971).

  • 77: Thelma and Louise (1991) and Calibre (2018)

    Text Matt & Adam!

"Vacations Gone Wrong" is this weeks theme. Ridley Scott's "Thelma and Louise" (1991) is a ground breaking feminist version of an outlaw road movie and both M&A  think it still holds true today. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon are both terrific in their title roles. Filmed in Scotland, "Calibre" (2018) seems to skirt on the edge of cliche, but ends up surprising enough to keep this little gem interesting and worth the pay off in the end. #madeinvermont #thelmaandlouise #bradpitt #geenadavis #calibre

Next, Patriotic Films with "1776" (1972) and Oliver Stone's "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989).

  • 76: City of God (2002) and Gomorrah (2008)

    Text Matt & Adam!

Growing up in crime is the theme for this week. The body counts are high in both our films. Brazil's "City of God" (2002) is the story of gangs in the slums of Rio de Janeiro and has the highest IMBD score of any film we reviewed on the show. Both M&A thought it was fantastic, but the violence can be a bit overwhelming. Italy's "Gomorrah" (2008) won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, but both felt compared to "City of God", it falls a little flat. M&A felt it was too ambitious and some the story lines should have been eliminated.

Trips gone bad is our next theme with "Thelma and Louise" (1991) and "Calibre" (2018).

  • 75: Trainspotting (1996) and American Pie (1999)

    Text Matt & Adam!

Adam gives Matt two important films from the 90's this week.  It's unbelievable that Matt had never seen "Trainspotting" (1996), but after watching it, he agrees with Adam that it's a minor masterpiece. Matt admits that 18 year old Matt may have liked "American Pie" (1999), but 65 year old Matt did not. Adam enjoyed this film of his youth and knew several of the characters in his world. Both agreed Eugene Levy is in the best scenes.  #trainspotting #irvinewelsh #americanpie #eugenelevy #90s #90skids #90smovies #madeinvermont #vermonter #vermontermade

Next, Growing up in Crime. "City of God" (2002) and "Gomorrah" (2008).

  • 74: The Last Picture Show (1971) and Being There (1979)

    Text Matt & Adam!

Matt's gives Adam two films from the 70's this week. Peter Bogdanovich's "The Last Picture Show" (1971), filmed in black and white, is the story about a dying Texas town in the early fifties. Both M&A thought it was original, well written and a must view.  Peter Sellers last good film "Being There" (1979), directed by the great Hal Ashby, was a labor of love. Sellers tried throughout the 70's to get made. Adam like it, but didn't love it as much as Matt (one of his favorites), as he thought it was a little slow and repetitive. Peter Sellers gives an a wonderful understated performance as the "brilliant" idiot, Chauncey Gardner.

Adam has Matt watch two from the 90's is next with Trainspotting (1996) and American Pie (1999)

  • 73: Bull Durham (1988) and Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)

    Text Matt & Adam!

Minor League/College Baseball is the theme for this week. "Bull Durham" (1987)  was Kevin Costner's first of his three 80s-90s baseball movies (Field of Dreams, For Love of the Game). Matt, a baseball fanatic, liked it more than Adam, who thought there was too much baseball and not enough of the Costner, Robbins and Sarandon dynamic. "Everybody Wants Some!!" (2016) is a Richard Linklater vehicle about three days before class starts for a college baseball team. Similar to "Dazed and Confused", but not as memorable. The relationship of the players is the centerpiece of the film, but both felt there were too many characters. Matt would have liked a little more baseball.

Next: 1970's films chosen by Matt: "The Last Picture Show" (1971) and "Being There" (1979).

  • 72: Barfly (1987) and Another Round (2020)

    Text Matt & Adam!

"Drinking" is this weeks theme and we have two good ones. Writer Charles Bukowski's "Barfly" (1987) is beautifully written trip into the grimy underworld of LA dive bars. Both Matt and Adam loved the dialogue, but neither could figure out where Mickey Rourke's accent was from. Denmark's "Another Round" (2020) is about four high school teachers who test a theory that they would all be better educators and men if they drank a little throughout the day. What teacher hasn't wanted to do that? The depiction of the relationship between the four was a solid centerpiece for this excellent film. A side note, Leonardo DiCaprio bought the rights to make an American version.  #barfly #bukowski #anotherround

Next, Minor League Baseball movies with "Bull Durham" (1988) and "Everyone Wants Some" (2016).
