This week we are spotlighting Harry Potter and our childhood experiences with the franchise. We talk about growing up with Harry Potter, pre-ordering the books and the nostalgia we feel towards the series. We are specifically referencing the first movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), which introduces us to the magical world of Harry Potter and Hogwarts and is pretty faithful adaptation of the written material. Topics include: Hogwart House readings (Slytherins and Hufflepuffs only, sorry), the privilege of Harry Potter and an unjust House Points system. 

But first, Frances successfully dissuades Alice to not watch After We Fell, the third instalment in the After series and based on the One Direction fanfiction. We reflect upon its popularity and it’s undeniable connections to Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey but ultimately, it's a crime against Harry Styles and we are not here for that. Digressions include One Direction (of course) and erotica.

This week we’re discussing Jennifer’s Body (2009), a horror film that infamously flopped when release due to a combination of misdirected marketing and backlash against Cody Diablo and Megan Fox at the time. Since then, it has resurged as a feminist cult classic especially in light of the Me Too era. 

We love Love at Two Friend in a Pod. We mention the new Australian Bachelorette, starring Brooke Blurton, our first queer and Indigenous lead. Also, a congrats to the newest addition to the Kardashian/Jenner clan, Travis Barker, with the recent announcement of his engagement to Kourtney Kardashian. 

Frances also mentions Touch Your Heart (2019), a Korean romance drama that’s about an actress who must work as a secretary to a lawyer to prepare for a role. It’s all sorts of fluffy romance and hits all the romantic comedy tropes we love in a Korean drama.

We also discuss Black Widow (2021), which we’ve been waiting for ever since the introduction of Black Widow into the Avenger’s scene. It’s a great action flick that sits perfectly fine within the Marvel universe but works as a stand-alone as well.

Welcome back to another spooky episode! This week we watched Practical Magic (1998), starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. It was critically panned when released but now a cult Halloween classic and it's mixed bag of romance/ comedy/fantasy/family drama/horror. The real winner for us is Nicole Kidman’s hair stylist, who gives us the curtain bangs of our dreams, and the real loser is not calling a lawyer when you’re involved in a crime.

We’re also discussing our experiences with games and gaming culture, coming from two people who don’t have a huge amount of experience in this area except for playing The Sims, Animal Crossing and Tetris. We watched Free Guy (2021), a fun comedy starring Ryan Reynolds in which he plays a NPC who discovers he is living in a video game.  We also talk about Monster Hunter (2020), based on the popular game of the same name. 

We also mention House of The Dragon, a Game of Thrones prequel due to come out in early 2022. We left the GOT finale feeling underwhelmed but that won’t stop us from checking out the premier for this new series.

In addition, Disney released a trailer for their upcoming animated film Encanto and we can’t wait - directed by Bryan Howard (Zootopia, Tangled) and music by Lin Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Moana). Seems like a formula for success to us!

It's the first week of Spooky Season and we’re starting it off with the chilling Carrie (1986), adapted from the Stephen King novel of the same name. We delve into what makes this a classic and navigate through the movie in all its pig-blood soaked glory. Digressions include the importance of sex education (at school and the Netflix series) and channeling bully energy into other endeavors. 

We also mention Mom’s Spaghetti, a new restaurant that has opened in downtown Detroit in conjunction with Eminem himself and references the song “Lose Yourself”. We discuss the value for money and the appeal of vomit on sweaters. 

Eminem is also in the headlines with the announcement of the  2022 Super Bowl Halftime show line-up which features Mr. Marshall Mathers well as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. It’s a star-studded lineup that strays from the usual mainstream pop and rock acts of previous years. Just don’t ask us anything about football.

This week we’re talking about the certified fresh Lady Bird (2017), starring Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Laurie Metcalf and Beanie Feldstein, and directed and written by Greta Gerwig. It’s a coming of age drama that offers us an authentic glimpse of adolescence as we follow Christine “Ladybird” McPherson, a senior at a Catholic high school in Sacramento, as she navigates life on the cusp of adulthood. Digressions include Marc by Marc Jacobs and The Wiggles.

We also mention Impeachment: American Crime Story (2021), the third installment of the anthology series and looks into the events leading up to Bill Clinton’s impeachment in the 90’s. It’s an interesting perspective, with Monica Lewinsky herself acting as a producer to help share her version of the story.

Alice mentions Sex Education, which is also into its third season on Netflix, which a refreshing teenage comedy that tackles important issues pertaining to individuality and expression of self and sexuality.

Frances mentions Nathan For You (2013-2018),  a doco-reality series starring comedian Nathan Fielder. Nathan is a consultant who helps with struggling businesses, although not always successful. All three seasons are available for streaming on Paramount+.

This week we are reviewing the 2006 romantic comedy John Tucker Must Die, starring Jesse Metcalfe, Brittany Snow, Sophia Bush, Ashanti and Penn Badgley (from Gossip Girl). It’s about three girls from different cliques who find out they’ve been secretly dating the same guy so they recruit Kate, the new girl, to break his heart and exact revenge. Specifically, we’re dissecting how this movie held up upon re-watch in 2021 and its failure to deliver to the expectations of its name. Side digressions include the portrayal of sport and science lab scenes in teenage comedies.

We also mention Squid Game (2021), a South Korean drama on Netflix about people facing financial hardships who are invited to participate in a killer survival game to win a cash prize. Overall, it’s a thrilling watch but we must warn that it’s quite graphic. If you enjoyed Squid Game, we would also recommend Liar Game (2007) and Alice in Borderland (2020).

Frances also mentions Y: The Last Man (2021), a drama TV series based on a comic book by Brian K. Vaughan. The series focuses on a post-apocalyptic world where all mammals with a Y-chromosome are killed except for one man and his pet monkey. Look out for this one on Binge (if you’re in Australia) for a week-by-week release.

On this week’s pod we’re starting with the announcement of Kylie Jenner’s pregnancy. The Internet has been abuzz for a while now with rumours of a younger sibling for Stormi and Kylie officially announced it last week via Instagram. Congrats to the expecting mum and also Kris Jenner!

We’re also giving our unsolicited opinion on the Met Gala, with this year’s theme being “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. Listen in to hear us navigate the world of high fashion and fashion history (or at least attempt to) and hear our takes on the highlights and lowlights of the night.

We also review Juno (2007), starring Elliot Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman, a coming-of-age film about a teenage girl who unexpectedly falls pregnant and chooses a young couple to be the adoptive parents. We discuss our thoughts of this movie in light of the current political environment in America and how watching it with a mature lens gives us a deeper appreciation of its subject matter of motherhood and growing up.

Hi, it's us again!

This week on the podcast we are discussing Cinderella (2021), the newest interpretation of the Cinderella story exclusive to Amazon Prime, starring Camila Cabello, Nicholas Galitzine, Idina Menzel, Pierce Brosnan, Minnie Driver and Billy Porter. Don't get us wrong, we LOVE a Cinderella moment and with such a star-studded cast this movie was set up for success. However, with its poor characterisation, questionable song choices and failure to deliver on a socially progressive front, it's sadly a miss from us. We also refer to Cinderella Story (2004) with Hilary Duff and the live-action remake of Disney's Cinderella (2015), which is a faithful adaptation and has The Dress. 

We also talk about Afterlife of the Party (2021), starring Victoria Justice, and is available on Netflix now. It tells the story of Cassie, who dies in an unfortunate accident and finds herself needing to fix her broken relationships before she can ascend into Heaven. It's highly predictable but will take you for an emotional ride, so bring the tissue box! 

And finally, a shout-out to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), which we'll watch once we're out of lockdown :)
