Two Lit Chicks

Today, I’m excited to be chatting with Tom Bromley, who has basically done every job in publishing and is now the Head of Learning for Reedsy. Tom’s been working in publishing for 25 years, starting off as a bookseller in Waterstones. Then he went to work at Little Brown as a copywriter. From there he went on to be a commissioning editor, editorial director, creative writing instructor and ghostwriter, which is what we are going to be speaking with Tom about today.

Think you're ready to write a spy thriller? Then you'd better take this quiz by David Bickford, the ex-legal director of MI5/MI6. Can you beat Julia's final score? (Yes, probably).

An enlightening chat with David Bickford, a British author and former Under Secretary of State and Legal Director to the British Intelligence Agencies, MI5 & MI6. David spent his working life diving into the cold murky seas of terrorism, espionage and organised  crime. At the forefront of the battle against international terrorism he was among the first to predict its onslaught. David is recognised, both in the Agencies where he was awarded Companion of the Order of the Bath for his work and in the business he now runs, for his ground-breaking solutions to defeat the terrorists and international organised criminals who threaten us. His spy thriller book, Katya, is available now (audio as well) and his second book, The Informer, will be out on December 1.

Today my second Lit Chick is Kate Sawyer, author of The Stranding and This Family. She is also the host of the podcast Novel Experience, where she talks to authors across forms and genres. In her life before writing, Kate worked as an actor—also as an event and theatre producer, yoga teacher, shop-keeper, and as a waitress. Kate trained in acting at Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and was a founding ensemble member of the award-winning theatre company The Faction. She also had her own production company called  The Curious Room. And her previous writing highlights before turning to fiction included self-publishing a cookbook of the recipes she developed for her little shop on Northcote Road, Dandelion.

How well do you know your royalty in literature? If you're anything like Julia, not very well! But this is a fantastic quiz, written by Marguerite Kaye and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

In this episode, Julia speaks with the writing duo, Sarah Ferguson (a.k.a. the Duchess of York) and her creative partner, Marguerite Kaye, about the process of "collabo-writing".

Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, a bestselling author, philanthropist and public speaker. The Duchess has published over 70 books including two autobiographies and other titles dealing with health, empowerment, history, art, as well as novels and children's stories.  Her debut historical novel Her Heart for a Compass was published globally in 2022 by Harper Collins and was a Sunday Times bestseller.  Her second historical novel A Most Intriguing Lady has been published by Harper Collins to critical acclaim in the US and UK in March this year, and is again a Sunday Times Bestseller. You  can read her full bio here.

And because all writer’s bios have to end with where they live and how many pets they have: the Duchess lives in Windsor with five Norfolk terriers and two corgis.

Marguerite Kaye has written almost 60 historical romances for Mills & Boon, set in a variety of historical eras, and has co-authored two books with Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. She is passionate about bringing history to life. Her character-driven and deeply emotional stories feature strong women fighting for independence and love on their own terms, and have been successfully published in over twenty countries worldwide. Marguerite lives in Argyll on the west coast of her native Scotland.
