Today on Typical Books with Lydia we have Horror in the Woods by Lee Mountford. This was a Book Market find from a previous haul, so I am glad to bet getting to it. A perfect little splatter novel to follow House of Leaves. Lee's work is on Amazon ▹ https://amzn.to/37CWQuw

Today on Typical Books we get into my final thoughts on House of Leaves. It was... okay. Okay? Well, it does say on the facing page "This is not for you". Thank you to Jo-Anne for piquing my interest in this book all over again. I did like the horror aspects here and it was a perfect time to read it! Mentioned in this video... a link to a wiki which is a potential spoiler so I regret I cannot type it here. Unfortunately in saying as much, I fear I am feeding the unearned (? perhaps) mystique that this book already has enough of. What a Catch-22. I gave it 2.5 stars... and I liked it.

Opinion at Halfway Through the Hall Today on Typical Books with Lydia we have a progress vlog on House of Leaves. It has been 20 years since this book was published, so better late than never I suppose. Not much to say except that I love the story of the Navidson Record, and not so much the 'other' story contained in the footnotes. Judging from the response here and on Instagram - where I posted a short vlog and portion of this - I am not alone.

Chilly Gothic Horror for Spooky Nights!
Today on Typical Books with Lydia we have Voices in the Snow by Darcy Coates.
This was published in 2020 via Poisoned Pen and is the first part of the Black Winter series.
Clare meets Dorran under the wildest of circumstance. Normally, when a story is at its heart a girl-meets-boy story I balk. I bail. I barf. But not here, as it is more of a girl-meets-house like many Coates novels are.
I can relate to so much of this - driving in the most hellish of winter, being stranded in the cold, dealing with distance between family members be it physical or not. I’ve no real experience with the heart of this story, however, which is a true monstrosity, and it is played out very well.
There are some minor plot questions and some minor gardening, time, and physics questions I had but these are small compared to the scope and plot as I enjoyed it all very much. I could guess that half of my questions would be answered had I re-read back a little instead of ploughing forward, but it was a compelling page-turner if there is one.
Looking forward to the next book in this series and I’ve rarely ever wanted to read a series so that is saying quite a bit!
