What is PCI compliance?

PCI compliance refers to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard and is intended to provide a secure framework for making payments online.

In some industries, including the financial industry, organisations have to be PCI compliant in order to win new contracts.

The main purpose for PCI compliance is to allow companies to reassure card-holders that they are providing a secure gateway through which payments can be made. Customers can also be reassured that their personal information is secure.

What is FTP?

FTP is a standard network protocol used to move or copy a file from one place to another. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is used to move data which may not be sent via traditional means because it is either too large, or perhaps particularly sensitive.

FTP requires a software package to input the information on to the server. There are many types of FTP, however in its most simple form you can enter your username and password into the relevant software package and enter the name of the host that you will be sending the file to.

What is SMTP?

"Simple Mail Transfer Protocol" or SMTP is the language used by email servers to communicate with each other.

SMTP also refers to the email server from which mail may be retrieved.

Email programs running on desktop computers and workstations communicate with an SMTP server using different protocols, usually POP or IMAP.

SMTP servers must be managed by knowledgeable professionals who ensure that settings are adjusted correctly for performance, security, and the prevention of misuse.

IMAP stands for Interactive Mail Access Protocol and is a popular system for the retrieval of electronic mail messages from a server.

By using IMAP, clients can manipulate their email in many ways such as creating multiple mailboxes and accessing office and public folders too.

The main feature of IMAP however is its ability to notify a client when an e-mail arrives

For this to work the e-mail client must maintain a TCP/IP connection to the IMAP server.

Unlike with POP3, IMAP allows for the retrieval of email from many different devices.

What is a Port?

The basic function of a port is to move information from one location to another, either

on the same computer or between networked machines.

Ports allow computers to communicate over a network.

Computers have many ports which can be used simultaneously and for a variety of different purposes including mass data transfer, emails, and connecting to the web.

Each port has a different ID number which distinguishes its use.

For example a certain range of ports are used for public programs such as HTTP and FTP, whereas other ports are made available for more wide ranging use.

POP3 stands for Post Office Protocol and is one of the most common protocols used for email retrieval today.

You can customise POP3 as you would any other email: to open, store, write and delete.

While POP3 email is utilised much like other email, it is set up to allow one server to send and receive email and communicate with other servers.

POP3 allows customers to retrieve and store their messages on or offline on their local PC.
