Ultimate Catalogue Clash

“A hole in the wall, maybe four feet by four feet, that started around your ankles. You had to hunker down, nearly crawl your way in, and once you were inside it was a whole other world. Dark wood, exposed brick, stone and shadows. The sharp waft of beer, cigarette smoke, the sweet funk of weed and rot. Music pumping. Extension cords snaking to the speakers, drums set up beneath a bedsheet, voices, laughter, college kids standing around with bellies full of beer, maybe some pills, definitely that frisson of being in the right place, with the right people, maybe even at the right time.”

- Peter Ames Carlin

Corey is away on important national security work. He says it's not spying "per se" but he can't tell me which country he's in and has told me I can't ask him any questions about plutonium. Oh, also, the superb author and journalist Peter Ames Carlin dropped by to talk about his brilliant book, "The name of this band is R.E.M." which Kev devoured ahead of jumping into this season. We chat about Peter's musical background, why he wanted to write about this band in particular, lots (of course) about the band themselves and a little bit o' The Boss, who's the subject of his most recent work.

But will Kevin flub the intro and will he force Peter to play any ridiculous games before he signs off?

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and disappear down Flamingo Lane.

And just like that we're wrapping up Season Six! We cover Side B of R.E.M.'s last multi-platinum-selling album, Monster. There's a lot more cock talk than you might have imagined heading in as Kev and Corey announce their new live musical project! But, will anyone get banged? Will anyone be blamed? Are we heading back into Thunderbird territory with a tribute to a fallen rocker on this side of the album, and will Corey be able to throw a Hail Mary pass to pick up the four points he needs to tie this season's game and scupper Kev's chance to win it for the first time?

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and just leave it.

Songs covered in this episode: "Tongue", "Bang and Blame", "I Took Your Name", "Let Me In", "Circus Envy", "You"

Polish horror writer Bartek Dabrowski once said “It is better if you do not see the monster. The monster in your head is far more powerful than any we can create on screen”. It's something that Steven Spielberg definitely leveraged when he made Jaws - which Corey recently discussed on his fantastic Power of Positive Geeking podcast! But that's enough promotion of Corey's other shows! We're cracking the seal on the final album of this season! Yep, that's right, we're turning up the disortion and kicking out the jams. But will Corey's nostalgia for this album cloud his judgment and will Kev be on board with such a violent, swerving change of direction by Mike, Bill, Peter, and Michael?

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and smile like the cartoon.

Songs covered in this episode: "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", "Crush with Eyeliner", "King of Comedy", "I Don't Sleep, I Dream", "Star 69", "Strange Currencies"

Rip off your slacks, grab your junk, and jump into the water, we're going Nightswimming!!! Also, fuck me, kitten..... and who's this Monty chap? It's a veritable smorgasbord of REM-y nuttiness this week as we talk Andy Kaufmann, capitalist assholes, and repetitive piano ballands! But will Side B of Automatic for the People hold up for Kev and Corey? Will a wasp ever be elected to congress, and is anyone actually reading these episode notes?

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and chase the ride.

Songs covered in this episode: "Monty Got a Raw Deal", "Ignoreland", "Star Me Kitten", "Man on the Moon", "Nightswimming", "Find the River"

"Automatic for the People" refers to the motto of Athens, Georgia-based eatery Weaver D's Delicious Fine Foods, after the phrase the restaurant's owner Dexter Weaver says to his customers instead of "you're welcome." We're ratcheting down the tempo and ratcheting up the drama on this one but will Kev find it all a bit pedestrian? Will Corey understand what the hell Michael is talking about in Try Not to Breathe? And will Kev pull away from Corey completely in the season-long game?

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and drive.

Songs covered in this episode: "Drive", "Try Not to Breathe", "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite", "Everybody Hurts", "New Orleans Instrumental No. 1", "Sweetness Follows"

We're taking a break from R.E.M. to cover one of our Ko-Fi submissions. It's the third album we've been given by the brilliant Ruddy Rutherford and it's an album that Corey loves! We have a chat about how to rank compilations/covers albums and talk lots about the movie and its standout cast. We changed up the format ever so slightly for this episode but we're still assigning our usual scores to the songs and the album! But will a bunch of young, fresh musicians wow Kev, and will Corey rank this one in his top ten?

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and slow your mustang down!

Songs covered in this episode: "Take Me To The River", "Chain Of Fools", "The Dark End Of The Street", "Destination Anywhere", "I Can't Stand The Rain", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Treat Her Right", "Do Right Woman Do Right Man", "Mr. Pitiful", "I Never Loved A Man", "In The Midnight Hour", "Bye Bye Baby", "Slip Away"

It's time for Side B and another gigantic hit for R.E.M! Kate Pierson from the B-52's shines and Michael and the boys mock the entire enterprise of pop music, but still produce one of the year's biggest hits! Those rapscallions! Will Corey be able to claw his way back into this season's game? Will Side B finally be the R.E.M. side that wows top to bottom? And what is Kev's favourite R.E.M. song, which he says is from this side of this record?

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and belong.

Songs covered in this episode: "Shiny Happy People", "Belong", "Half a World Away", "Texarkana", "Country Feedback", "Me in Honey"

After a brief one week hiatus due mainly to Kev's inability to organize his life and his recently atrocious immune system just being an absolute dick, we're back! We're looking at the album that sent R.E.M. into the stratosphere and on Side, we'll be discussing arguably the single most identiable and career-defining song in this band's catalogue. But, will Losing My Religion score the elusive 10-10-5? Will Corey dig an instrumental from the boys, and is this going to crack Kev's top ten all time Side As?

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and hold each other!

Both Kev and Corey reckon their favourite song on Green is on this side of the record! We talk about Father's Day, ZZ Top, Flash Gordon (and the madness of Chaz Charles) and the upcoming Seaside Pod Review. Oh, we also talked about R.E.M. after a long catch up at the top of the episode! But will Corey engage in some self-flagellation? Will Kev apologize for pigeon-holing Corey as an Eliminator-and-on ZZ Top fan? And what's the ticket's sold Corey???

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and just hold her.

Songs covered in this episode: "Orange Crush", "Turn You Inside-Out", "Hairshirt", "I Remember California", "Untitled"

And we're off! Quite often, when indie bands go to a major label, they lose a lot of their original fan base because of the dreaded - and in Kev's opinion, deeply flawed - notion of "selling out". Thankfully, Warner Bros. was a label that believed artists knew best when it came to their own music so the suits stayed in their lane and let the creatives get on with it. But will this translate to crossover success for this ragtag band of arty types from Athens? Will Kev's nostalgia carry his scores into the higher reaches and will Corey be able to stomach the pure pretentiousness???

The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and face north!
