On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to multidisciplinary artist Celina Muldoon in 2021.

Identity, memory and surveillance are themes around which Celina Muldoon investigates relationships between socio-political structures and the body.

Her work spans Live Performance, Film and Installation. She uses collaborative processes to test live performance methodologies in response to site and context. Her unique live installations and videos generate uncertainty through satire and wit.

Critical triggers of Muldoon's live work rely upon audience participation and interaction. Audio and live installation elements work in tandem to manifest highly charged emotional experiences unfolding momentarily in real time. 

With a particular focus on the intimate space and the analysis of the body as representation of political agency, her work is realised through sci-fi re-enactments of mythological narratives. Often what arises through her live performances is a deep emotional connection between participants and the audience. Her primary motivation is to cultivate moments of magic and fantasy. Within this surrealist environment she conjures human connection with the viewer and strives to promote a collective sense of tolerance, compassion and empathy.

Celina Muldoon is an artist based in Northwest Ireland. Research projects include collaboration with the dept. of Neuroscience in Trinity College Dublin.

She has exhibited nationally and internationally in Bushwick Studios N.Y., Cyberarts Gallery, Boston and with Craw Festival Berlin. Her major multi-disciplinary work SIRENS is funded by the Next Generation Award and the Artist in the Community Scheme Award from the Arts Council. Selected exhibitions include SIRENS for Live Collision, Dublin, 2019; SIRENS III solo exhibition in Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin, 2019; and SIRENS IV in Futures: Series 3; Episode 3, R.H.A. Dublin, 2019.

She has completed residencies in Cowhouse Studios and Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annamakerrig. Celina Muldoon was artist-in-resident at St. Vincent's Primary School, Dublin as part of Creative Generations supported by The Central Bank of Ireland.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to filmmaker, writer, Richard Harvey in 2021.

Richard Harvey is a writer and director from Dublin. His work is heavily influenced by Irish mythology and the horror genre and often deals with themes such as mortality, toxic masculinity and the dysfunctional family. 

Some of his achievements include winning the 2020 YMVC at First Cut Youth Film Festival for the music video for ADT’s Even the Sun Don’t Shine on Lonely Hearts in Shadow. The music video also screened at DISFMF 2020 and went on to be nominated for an EDA. 

His 2018 short film Real Horrorshow screened at The Richard Harris International Film Festival 2018, First Cut Youth Film Festival 2020 and The Revere International Student Film Festival 2020.

His 2019 short film Polaroid screened at the Richard Harris International Film Festival 2019 and the 2020 National Student Media Awards.

Most recently he has written and directed a music video for La Di Da’s Communicate (2022) alongside co writer and producer Alex Keatinge from Glance Stealer Productions as well as short film Ceist an Taibhse (2024). 

Richard is also available for works as location sound and has experience working on short films, features and documentary. 

His photography portfolio includes headshots, food, fashion, events and product. He is always relaxed, yet focused and professional in nature, consistently delivering a high standard.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Serena Caulfield in 2012.

Serena Caulfield is an artist who makes paintings. Memories morph into tall tales. Invented imagery invites novel narratives. Transforming old to new, past to present, absence to presence, here to there, she likes to paint quickly and think slowly.

Serena has exhibited regionally and nationally. Recent group shows include WIDE OPEN SPACE, at Wexford Co. Council Buildings, BEEP Painting Biennial, Wales, GENERATION2022: New Irish Painting, Butler Gallery, Kilkenny and Zurich Portrait Prize, at the National Gallery of Ireland and Crawford Art Gallery. Solo exhibitions include Dream Baby Dream, Solomon Fine Art Dublin, (2024), The Remnants and the Ruins RCC, Letterkenny (2024), Not somewhere else but here at Wexford Arts Centre, (2023) and Convergences at Ballina Arts Centre (2023).

She is currently working towards a solo exhibition at Art-Seen Contemporary, Nicosia, Cyprus in Spring 2025 and her work will be included in multiple group exhibitions in the coming months.

Recent awards include The Arts Council of Ireland Visual Arts Bursary, Platform 31 Artist Award, an Artlinks Visual Arts Bursary and an Arts Council Agility Award. Serena has an MA in Fine Art from NUA, Norwich, UK (2009) and a BA from Gorey School of Art and Wexford Campus School of Art and Design, IT Carlow.

Her work is held in private, public and corporate collections nationally and internationally.

Lukeman first came to prominence in the summer of 1995 when he and The Black Romantics took up a residency at The Da Club (Dublin Arts Club) in Dublin selling out night after night. The band's set included interpretations of Jacques Brel along with several of Jack's own compositions. The band recorded the album Wax in 1995 before splitting in 1997.

Lukeman established himself as a solo artist and songwriter with his live work and his breakthrough 1999 multi-platinum selling album Metropolis Blue, gaining record deals and touring extensively in the US and Europe, and becoming a regular fixture on U.S college radio with the singles "Rooftop Lullabye", "Georgie Boy" and "Ode to Ed Wood".

During his musical career Lukeman has worked with composer Brian Byrne, the Nelson RiddleOrchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic and producers Greg Wells, Craig Armstrong and Martin Clancy.

Lukeman has also performed over the years supporting or alongside U2, Ronnie Wood, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, John Lee Hooker, Elvis Costello, Jools Holland, and Marianne Faithfull, and has appeared at venues such as Olympia Paris, Royal Albert Hall in London, and The Lincoln Center in NYC.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Niamh O'Malley in 2021.

Niamh O’Malley is interested in the exhibition as an architecture for scrutiny and attention.

She is drawn to materials that display traces of their own making, labouring the surfaces of polished wood and graphite. There is a haptic, agitated quality to the edges and surfaces of her sculpture and drawings. When glass, a favoured material is seen it is sometimes tinted, and encountered as slivers of edged, translucent, solidness, potentially directing us to observe, re-observe and filter. Niamh O’Malley also uses video for its role as an animator; capturing and arresting attention and reminding us of our compulsion to gather and to make still. Her moving image works deliberately mark the observational tone or document of the film as subjective and delimited. The partial or the glimpse can be enough.

Born Co. Mayo, Niamh O’Malley studied at University of Ulster, Belfast and lives and works in Dublin.

David Beattie is an artist and lecturer in Art and Research Collaboration at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology.

Beattie’s sculptural practice explores the material world through experiential, physical engagements with objects and non-objects. Recent projects have focused on the social and environmental impact of digital technologies, haptic robotics and machine learning. He was awarded the Harpo Foundation Award in 2010 and was a recipient of the Hennessy Art Fund for IMMA Collection, 2016. In recent years, he has been commissioned to produce a number of temporary and permanent public artworks including VOID Commissions, Derry (2021), Reflectors, Bray, Co.Wicklow and Patterns of Illumination, Griffith Barracks Multi-denominational School, Dublin.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Bernadette Kiely in 2021.

Bernadette Kiely is a visual artist based on the quayside of the river Nore in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.

Known for her powerful portrayals of the fragility of the natural and physical world, Bernadette draws particularly on her experiences as a child growing up on the quayside in Carrick on Suir, Co. Tipperary, where she witnessed many flood events which have continued throughout her life as an adult living on the river Nore in Co. Kilkenny. The effects of flooding and decay on land and human lives have been an enduring theme in her practice for over 25 years expanding in scale and intensity along with the urgency of the present climate emergency.

Bernadette is represented by Taylor Galleries, Dublin and is a member of Aosdana, the governmental body of artists who are deemed by their peers to make a continuing significant contribution to the arts in Ireland.

“Bernadette Kiely’s Don’t Need No Country, Don’t Fly No Flag at the Paintwork’s Gallery in Galway during the summer was a wonder. it’s a visual arts exhibition about borders and a warming world. Flooded landscapes, drawing from memories, past emotions, the flooded street, the flooded house, river rats, debris and how you live through it all on the river Nore. On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Yero Adugna Eticha in 2021.

Yero Adugna Eticha, born in Oromia/Ethiopia, is a Berlin/ Addis Abeba based photographer working for renowned culture Institut : Akadamie der Künste, Tanz im August , Festival of Future Nows, Studio Olafur Eliasson & his own different projects. As a spät passionate runner, he started his photographic career at the age of 29 by covering Berlin party events und alte heim. From 2008 to 2011, he joined Ostkreuzschule in Berlin to study photography. He developed an individual documentary style while focussing on social and politics issues, it´s staging and in the end, humanity. "Yeroo Kenyaa", his project about youth movement, took him to different citys in Ethiopia.

His most recent project and passion is Black in Berlin; 

When Breonna Taylor and George Floyd were murdered by police officers in 2020, the global protest movement Black Lives Matter got high attention. In Berlin, like many other places, people demonstrated their solidarity. Yero Adugna Eticha (b. in Oromia, Ethiopia; lives and works in Berlin) decided to get active and document Black life in Berlin. He walked through the streets of Berlin handing out flyers inviting Black people to be photographed by him. In the following two years, Adugna Eticha portrayed over 512 people, listened to their stories and learned the mundane but moving details of their lives during the encounters. 

Black in Berlin presents a selection of these encounters. They are 100 portraits of the multifaceted realities of the Black diaspora’s life in Berlin: the author, the opera singer, the white-collar single mom, and the pensioner. With a conversation between Yvette Mutumba and the artist.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Amy O'Riordan in 2021.

Working both behind and in front of the eye of the camera lens, artist Amy O'Riordan oversees every detail of costumes, make up, extensive setting up of props, settings and locations.

Her photographic images offer a privileged glimpse into an intimate world by challenging by gaze. O’Riordan presented a series of works that specifically addressed subverting gender roles, explored female empowerment and investigated the female gaze. Her work makes references to both the historical tradition of painting and popular culture to examine female identity.

In her more recent works she presents a series of intimate allegorical self portraits which she stages in her home in Clonsilla, Dublin which further examine complex questions regarding female gender as well as her own female identity. Her photographs again are staged, complete with photographic tableaux, make up with a strong element of performance and theatricality. By being both behind and in front of the eye of the camera, she maintains complete bodily autonomy of her own image and creates her very own visual language.

Ten years ago, O’Riordan experienced a life changing accident which left her with a permanent spinal injury, requiring nine spinal surgeries needing a bionic spinal implant and she lives with chronic nerve pain. By focusing and creating art professionally has given her a tremendous sense of joy, purpose and catharsis despite her physical challenges

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Tadhg Ó'Cuirrín in 2021.

Tadhg Ó Cuirrín is an artist and teacher based in the west of Ireland.

He received a BA in Fine Art, Painting from the Limerick School of Art and Design in 2009. He works in a variety of media, and his work was recently shortlisted for the Hennessey Craig Award at the RHA 192nd Annual Exhibition. In November 2022 he will present new work at TULCA Festival of Visual Art in Galway. In March 2023 he will present a new exhibition at the Custom House Studios in Westport. Recent solo and two person exhibitions include "The Unexamined Life" in July 2021, and "Magic, Metallic Saliva” with Karen Conway at 126 Artist Run Gallery in March 2022.

His work is supported by Ealaín na Gaeltachta, the Arts Council of Ireland, and Galway County Council.
