This was one of the biggest UFO Flaps in world history, with over 500 reports over several months' time. It was investigated by Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Ted Phillips, and Dr. Harley Rutledge, among others. Rutledge's book "Project Identification" is about this flap which is still going on today.
