Christmas is a very special time of year. Most people don't think of ghosts and ghost stories when it comes to Christmas, but this really is the darkest time of the year, when the daylight doesn't last for very long, so why wouldn't spirits hang around more. And we all like to gather with family for Christmas, so it makes sense that a ghost might want to make an appearance on that night. Christmas night is usually cold and dark and so the perfect time to explore twenty different locations the world over, which are said to be the haunt of spooks that only make an appearance at Christmas. As the snow falls gently outside, and twinkling fairy lights illuminate our homes, let's gather together around the warmth of the fire to delve into the spectral side of Christmas, and ask just how haunted does it get around Christmastime?

Lighthouses are literally a light in the darkness. Many have been located in remote places and all of them are located in areas that have suffered shipwrecks. Families living at lighthouses faced struggles and sometimes death. The Heceta Head Lighthouse is no different. Today, it has been turned into a bed and breakfast with beautiful views and at least one ghost. The Moravian denomination is one of the oldest Protestant denominations in Christianity. Its roots date back to the mid-1400s and was one of the first movements to break free from Roman Catholicism. Many of the followers became exiles and traveled to America, where they settled in states like Georgia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. They established their own cemeteries, dubbing them as God's Acre.

Placerville is one of these California towns that got its start during the Gold Rush. This was a rough and tumble Wild West place also known as Hang Town. The Cary House Hotel was built to accommodate people coming in for the Gold Rush and was the jewel of Placerville. The hotel is believed to be quite haunted and there could be several reasons why. The Odd Fellows were strong in this town and met at the hotel. And there were two deaths there. But it isn't the only haunted location. Several buildings have spirits. Rolling Hills Asylum in East Bethany, New York was once known as the Old Country Home and served as the Genesee County Poor Farm for decades. The main building spans over 60,000 square feet with a subterranean tunnel and has stood for almost 200 years. It saw its share of tragedies and hardship through the years. Today, it serves as a museum and paranormal hotspot, featuring tours and investigations. This is said to be one of the most haunted locations anywhere in the world. In 1953, a horrific kidnapping and murder captured the attention of the nation. The perpetrators were Carl Austin Hall and Bonnie Emily Brown Heady and the victim was a sweet and innocent six-year-old boy named Bobby Greenlease. Bonnie and Carl were put to death in the gas chamber at the Missouri State Penitentiary for their crime. And it would seem that although their bodies left the prison, their spirits have not and they continue to haunt the abandoned halls of death row.

A little known factory town was home to the Kreischer Mansion, which actually had a twin. There were two exact mirror-image homes that sat next to each in Staten Island, fittingly owned by brothers. Only one of them remains and it changed ownership many times over the years. There were deaths on the property and people took to calling this the murder house. Egypt is a land of ancient treasures and wonders. Pharaohs were honored in death with immense public monuments and tombs like pyramids, temples and obelisks. The Old Kingdom of Egypt built their places of death in Giza and the Nile Delta. The New Kingdom pharaohs of Egypt wanted to be buried closer to their dynastic roots and they had their crypts placed in the hills of Luxor. This area became known as the Valley of the Kings. The Valley of the Kings would end up housing the remains of at least sixty Egyptian nobles, including pharaohs from King Tut to Ramses II. There are more than tombs here though. There are tales of curses and hauntings in the Valley of the Kings.
