  • Are you Showing Up as YOU? - episode 113

I had the opportunity to be on Molly Mandelberg’s podcast, Tactical Magic.  She was a guest on UY I Believe in the Law of Attraction, episode 104.  She reached out and proposed we be on each other’s show so we did.  I enjoy collaborating.   You don’t know what things you may uncover about yourself, or others, through connection.  It was a pleasure to talk about what I want for me.  What I want for you.

We talked a lot about being yourself and feeling confident to sit fully in that.  I know it’s not easy.  I believe we spend far too much time wondering what others think and  tailor-making who we are to fit into expectations that aren’t actually ours.  I think we all do it to a degree perhaps in particular situations or around specific people.  My goal for myself, and for you, is to do less wondering, and expand into who you already are, without apology.  Sound familiar?

many great people during my 15 years there.  People like her.  During our conversation, Hillary shared her Grandma Shirley is a great source of inspiration through her example of faith, of insisting upon seeing the good in others, and why Steel Magnolias is one of Hillary’s favorite movies.  It’s a well-thought our reason with lots of layers.

Don’t you love that she and her husband Greg got into Legos during the pandemic?  Or that they put a jumpy in their garage instead of a car to help their boys get the wiggles out?  This shows her playful, creative, innovative side which is usually at the ready.  Hillary had insightful nuggets to drop like every day we can change our course.  We can do it in our relationships, in our perspective at how we look at  things, and in our responsibility for the part we play in our interactions.  We can do something about that if we want to.  Oh, and if you’re struggling in any way be sure to lean on your people and ask for help.  If they are your people they want to be there for you.  Because you want to do the same for them.

Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation.

  • Grandma Shirley would be Proud - episode 112

Where do I begin with today’s Believe guest, Hillary Henninger?  I got to know her through children’s theater which is a running theme on the show because I met so many great people during my 15 years there.

  • Being an Agent of Change - episode 111

Jenah Kuderman is cool.  In every way possible.  Her style, her warmth, her deep care for others.  I imagine that’s what drew me to her.  She was on a lounge chair poolside in the shade with her husband Bryan.  We soon got to know them and found we had similar thoughts lots of things including faith.  What is true, noble and right - love as the full stop answer to all, and what is not - anything that is not love or keeps people out because of who they are.

This is a longer episode because we went deep in these matters.  Remember this, “My identity is not in convincing others that they are wrong.” As said by Mike Erre and I relate to it 100%. This conversation will especially appeal to those who have struggled with feeling like the Christianity they were raised in, or subscribed to, is no longer the one you recognize.  Maybe you’ve panned out and made your viewpoint bigger, and bigger still.  Or maybe your’e curious about the progression of spirituality in others.  I didn’t know Jenah and I were on similar paths of deconstruction until we had this conversation.  I sure am glad we did.

  • Judge Only by Finding the Good in Others - episode 110

Betty Estes and I had a conversation while she was in her home dance studio which I thought was incredible.  She says you can get a lot of house in Tennessee!  Betty is our Believe guest for today and she had a lot of intriguing thoughts to share.  Like remaining faithful even when things are hard.  Like why it’s essential to check with others about the facts before you draw conclusions.

We will certainly have hard times in this life.  Betty survived her darkest hour.  She was broken but would not  stay that way.   Determined to find the good she continues to look for it in others.  That is the only thing she wants to judge.  Now she heads into a new chapter of retirement, more dancing, and lots of writing and collaborating.  I can’t wait to see it all unfold.

  • To Thine Own Self Be True - episode 109

We are entering our third season officially with this episode.  You have all made this experience more than I could hope for or imagine.  Thank you.  Truly thank you…

It was a pleasure reconnecting with today’s guest, Rachael Baciocco.  We worked for the same organization several years ago.  Now she is a twenty-something woman discovering who she is. Rachael is exploring all the different parts of herself to find out what is true.  Part of that is revealed through our relationship with others.  Connection and finding your people are paramount.  As she says, What do we have in this world except moments with each other?

Like Rachael said, being kind is what matters.  Being open is essential to understanding.  I like that she is being intentional about what she believes and why she believes it.  It’s an important step in adulting to see if the belief-system you were raised with is really your own or not.  `She is trying on different things and seeing what aligns with her, keeping what works, and discarding what does not.  Along the way she is taking the larger perspective on it all as she focuses on the difference between being our best self and our true self.  In my opinion, she’s already there.

Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation.

  • How to Show Up for Each Other - episode 108

We worked together some years ago.  I find today’s Believe guest, Scotti Taylor, to be a woman of substance, of wicked determination and unapologetic in being herself.  I like that in a person.  She’s been on the show before in, I Will not be Silent, episode 33, and Takeaways and Looks Ahead, episode 40.  Our conversation covers how outgoing people can actually be introverted and the legacy of a loving grandmother for starters.

I knew I would enjoy connecting with Scotti again.  Her answers to the Believe questions happen to be things I whole heartedly agree with.  (Even if I didn’t, that’s ok too.) If God knows who we are, either by design or allowance, surely he loves us no matter what.  As Scotti pointed out, he does not deny love.  When you love someone different from you that’s when you figure out what deep, abiding love is.  And isn’t that what all want?  To be seen and valued for who we are?  Yes please.  Let’s do more of that.

Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation.

  • A 30,000 ft Viewpoint - episode 107

Alvin Coda and I met a couple of years ago when my primary doctor recommended him for the annual skin check.  So, yes, he’s a dermatologist.  What struck me about him from minute-one was his warmth, humor and ease.  We even talked about the podcast at that initial appointment and he genuinely seemed interested.  He momentarily left the room, came back in and said he had subscribed.  How’s that for bedside manner?  Fast forward, I’ve been back for appointments, and that initial impression was exactly the same, maybe even more so.   Out of his earshot, I commented to his assistant, you must enjoy working with him.  And she said, yes, it’s going on five years and I really do.

I went into this conversation with Alvin suspecting I’d be thrilled with the outcome and I am.  I relish his 30,000 foot outlook on life in being a good person, doing good things while he is multi-tasking making his wife one of her favorite dinners.  And while I may not agree with his choice of Stepbrothers for a favorite movie, I appreciate his rationale for finding depth and beauty in it.  I think that’s who he is - passionate, caring and ready to persevere.

Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation.

  • Pretty Privilege - episode 106

For the show today, we have Taylor Conde-Nau, a guest in our Believe series.  Yes, she’s a relation.  A daughter.  If you’ve been a long-time listener you’ve heard her before in A Crash Course in Adulthood episode 5, and I Did it My Way, episode 54.  She has some things to say about pretty privilege which was not a phrase I had heard before.  Oh sure, I’ve seen certain people have advantages based on attributes they had little or nothing to do with, but hadn’t heard it from the unique perspective of this 21 year-old.

I admire how this young lady is adulting into a cherished version of herself as she expands into who she is.  We need to really understand ourselves before we can embrace who we are.  Like her love of horror as a genre and my aversion to it.   “It’s all good” as I like to say.  Taylor gets to be her own healthy, happy person as do you.  And me.

  • Come as an Idea Person - episode 105

Today’s Believe conversation is with Lindsey Heinrich.  We got reacquainted recently and because of our subsequent, fulfilling get-to-know-you conversation I invited her on the show.  I am deeply moved by people who show up confident in themselves and create a safe space for you to do the same.  Lindsey is such a person.  We talk about embracing the imperfect of each person including yourself then offering grace.

I am eager for the collaboration between Lindsey and Betty.  The book, The Space Between, sounds very inspirational as it reveals the stories of others in all their beauty and pain.  The addition of Lindsey’s art will no doubt be impactful as we ‘feel all the feels’ of the people who dared to share a piece of themselves with us.  I know I learn about myself, and this life, by hearing the experiences of others.

  • I Believe in the Law of Attraction - episode 104

Molly and I got connected through Audry, a podcast platform. We met up and decided to do an episode swap at her invitation. I do marvel at how we can connect with others. In this conversation Molly shares some wild experiences she’s had with animals and the belief she has in actualizing the potency of who we are.

I appreciate Molly’s curiosity and desire to dive into the things she finds interesting and that have propelled her into how she is living her life. It brought her to the work she is doing and no doubt, she’s been able to come alongside others to maximize their content and to feel good about who they are. Sounds familiar right?
