Welcome UA listeners, to our special mini episode of a short recap on the presidential election in the United States. Twas' the longest week of 2020, with heightened anxiety, and many sleepless nights; a lingering fear of impending doom. Thankfully, we now celebrate a collective and successfully mobilized overhaul of Trump; however, we must not forget there is still lots of work to be done! 

This week we will continue our discussion on anti-black racism within the realm of policing. Through personal storytelling, we will discuss the implications police encounters have psychologically, and emotionally on our bodies.

Through conversations around police violence/brutality and our own experiences, we highlight the ways in which the history around policing is ultimately anti-black, with a call out on this institutions purposeful intentions behind surveilling Black bodies. 

Has your identity ever been brought into question, because of the colour of your skin? Have you ever felt like a spectacle? Is your mind colonized?

For our first episode of UA, we start with a discussion around the rootedness of anti-Black racism and constructs around Black identity. This week, we lay the groundwork for an understanding of the ways in which society has been socially conditioned to internalize racist constructs around Blackness, and the “knowable” Black body through white supremacy. 

Opening up this podcast to you through some casual conversation and personal storytelling of our experiences with racism, micro-aggressions, and feelings of dehumanization as a result of “othered-ness” - we hope that you keep this understanding of Black identity construction in mind as we move through discussions in future episodes about the ways in which this discourse has been infused within specific systems of oppression, of which continue to violently affect BIPOC.
