Animaine & Dani kick off the 1st full ep of their former in-show segment by reviewing the 1st issue of Tuskegee Heirs by Greg Burnham & Marcus Williams. The futuristic Sci-Fi series, that launched in 2016, follows 5 youth pilots as they go from training in secret on the Historic airfields of the Tuskegee Airmen, to rescue missions and giant mech battles. Burnham & Williams have a very unique art and storytelling style, and this series puts all of their great talents on parade while infusing real Black History in the mix as well. No one does Black folks in comics like this Dynamic Duo, and this entry in the "Kids piloting robots to save the world" genre is one you definitely need to check out!
Dani and Animaine take a few minutes to reflect on the life of Chadwick Boseman, following his passing on August 28th. The 43 year old actor was a shining star, and he used his short time in the spotlight to inspire generations of men, women and children. Chadwick Forever.
Animaine & Dani discuss ways that people join nerd spaces & demand that everything change for them, then respond to some content from media analyst Stitch (https://stitchmediamix.com), where she is critical of racism in nerd fandom spaces (starting at 12:59). The main video of focus, titled "#WhatFandomRacismLooksLike The Star Wars Fandom's Nonsense" talks about the inherent racism in Reylo shippers & Star Wars fans in general. The Duo does their best to figure out Stitch's points & interpretations regarding racism within nerdery, to... mixed results.
Animaine & Dani catch up with each other, then get into a review for the 1st issue of the indie comic titled The Search for Sadiqah (pronounced SAH-deh-kuh). The book centers around a young Black girl embarking on a gripping adventure across the Southwest US in the early 1920s as turmoil and upheaval befall her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. During the discussion they also touch on how it feels to see Black characters drawn in a stylized & accurately representative way, the importance of making characters who feel like real people, how to weave socio-political themes into stories , artistic integrity, and much more!
