Perinatal Mental illness affects up to 27% of new and expectant mothers and cuts across a wide range of conditions. If left untreated, mental health issues can have significant and long lasting effects the woman the child and the entire family. There is a lot of support available for women struggling. The Mental Health Liaison Teams operate in most Acute General Hospital looking after patient who experience mental health crisis. Most patients who come into an emergency department may never have experienced mental health crisis before and it may be their fist experience of mental illness. It is therefore crucial that the first contact  is with skilled staff who can support them in a positive way.
