When Jesus and his disciples encounter a Canaanite woman seeking deliverance for her daughter, the confrontation between them leaves many of us feeling deeply confused and uncomfortable: why did Jesus treat this foreign woman with such contempt? Does this mean Jesus is racist or misogynistic? By reading the passage carefully, contextually, and, most importantly, with the eyes the faithful Canaanite woman gives us, we begin to see the encounter quite differently.
