for those who have no preferences.”
    - Third Zen patriarch
Sitaram Dass spent several years serving his beloved teacher Ram Dass on Maui, where he was shown the path of Bhakti, the yoga of service and devotion to God. He is the Director of the Sacred Community Project, where he works to lower the barriers of access to contemplative and devotional practices through affordable, free, and donation-based offerings, one-on-one spiritual support, and prison outreach. • Relax into the cosmic joke
Venture under Maharajji’s blanket as we meet Nathan and we explain together as One…😂♾😂 the cosmic joke😂♾😂♾😂🕉. In this heart opening conversation, we explore how “Spiritual bipolar” influenced his spiritual awakening.
“Often the perspectives about yourself and the universe that you arrive at through meditation make you want to giggle or laugh. This giggle is without malice. It’s a cosmic giggle, one that I identify with my guru, Maharaj-ji. For his giggle was not of this world. It was not a social or personality giggle, but rather a cosmic chuckle, the delight in the fun of it all. His giggle was from the plane that gives us the term “lila,” the divine dance of life.”

  • Awakening Compassion
Venture under Maharajji’s blanket as Willie Katinowsky, author of “Spiritual as F*ck”returns to the show. We discuss compassion, Buddha, the judgmental mind, spiritual community, social media and how it all relates to our spiritual awakening.
“Judgment comes, in part, out of your own fear. You judge other people because you're not comfortable in your own being. By judging, you find out where you stand in relation to other people.”
    - Ram Dass
Willie is the author of Spiritual as F*ck and a teacher of yoga and meditation, currently in the Reading Pennsylvania area. His book is a relatable tale of navigating the realm of spirituality from a skeptical viewpoint. He also wrote this in the third person, which is kind of weird.

“I was carrying a burden of doubt when I returned to India to see Maharaj-ji in 1970.  In America there was a boy who had been my student who had died.  He was a deeply spiritual kid whose father was a foreign scientist.  The family was well off and had a home in New Hampshire and lived in Arizona.  The boy lived in New York but had gone to do sadhana in a cave on their place in Arizona.  Later I heard from his mother that he had died.
The mother said, “My son has achieved mahasamadhi (final merging).”  She showed me the diary that he had kept.  He wrote that he was taking samadhi, that she should not worry and that he would be watching over her.  She asked me, “Is everything he said true?”  I said, “Well I don’t know, but I’m going back to India in the fall to see my guru, and he will certainly know.”  I had my doubts.  No student of mine had gained mahasamadhi, and I said to myself that it must be drugs. Later I learned he had indeed taken LSD.  There had been blood on the walls of the cave and I assumed he had done prānayāma (yogic breath control) while on LSD and he overdid it.
One day we were all showing our photos to Maharaj-ji, passport pictures and pictures from our wallets.  I remembered I had this boy’s photo and went to get it.   It was his high school graduation picture. It didn’t look much like how I remembered him.  But I put his picture next to Maharaj-ji, who said, “He left his body.”  Then he proceeded to quote from the boy’s diary, “Tell Ram Dass I have finished my work. I will be watching over you, Mother …” and he give me all the information from the diary.  Maharaj-ji said, “He’s one with Christ.  He has finished his work. He’s watching over his mother.”
Then he said, “Your medicines weren’t the cause of his death.”  That had been weighing on my mind.  I wrote to the mother and told her what Maharaj-ji said.  This is just one instance of how Maharaj-ji worked with the subtleties of our lives beyond the appearances to confirm our faith, including our drug karma.”

  • Even Damien Laughed!
Venture under Maharajji’s blanket as Jason and Baba Here Love speak about modern society, politics, raising children, culture and relate it all to our spiritual awakening.
“Somebody whose role is hellish.. Like I visited a Benedictine monastery. I was meditating with brother David from upper NY, and the Abbot said, “I’d like to have you come to my office.” He asked me one question, “What did the kiss between Judas and Jesus mean?” Well, I said, “I thought they congratulated themselves on this thing they planned, which is going to give the gift of the story… commending something. One good guy and one bad guy right? They kiss.”
They’re two souls and they are saying, “One of us will play the good guy and one of us will play the bad guy.” See, you go up a triangle, you go up and you come to the point of one, after going from one and two, you come to three, at the point and along the way, the one includes the two, and the one includes good and bad. That’s who we are, that third, single point, containing both.”

  • The terrible dance of capitalism
Venture under Maharajji’s Blanket as Jason and I meet the mother energy of cosmic consciousness. We talk about her dance of capitalism, AOC marrying the capitalists and going beyond US vs. Them. It’s all us. It’s all One
Here is a story from Ram Dass
“Some years ago I put out a set of records called “Love, Serve, Remember.” The records – which had music, readings from the Gospel of John, and all kinds of neat things – came in an album with a beautiful booklet with text and pictures. It was a wonderful package, and we sold it by mail order for about $4.50.
I showed the album to my father. Dad was a wealthy Boston lawyer – a conservative Republican, a capitalist, and, at the time, the President of a railroad. He looked over the album and said, “Great job here! But, gee, you know – four and a half dollars? You could probably sell this for ten, maybe fifteen dollars, don’t you think?”
    I said, “Yeah, I know.”
“Would fewer people buy it if it were more expensive?” he asked.
“No,” I replied, “probably the same number would buy it.”
”Well I don’t understand, then,” he pressed on. “You could sell it for at least ten, and you’re selling it for $4.50? What’s wrong, are you against capitalism or profit or something?”
I tried to figure out how to explain to him how our approaches differed. I said, “Dad didn’t you just try a law case for Uncle Henry?”
”Yeah,” he replied, “and it was a damned tough case. I spent a lot of time in the law library.”
I asked, “Did you win the case?”
And he answered, “Yeah, I won it.”
Now, my father was a very successful attorney, and he charged fees that were commensurate with his reputation. So I continued. “Well, I bet you charged him an arm and a leg for that one.”
Dad was indignant at the suggestion. “What, are you out of your mind? That’s Uncle Henry – I couldn’t charge him.”
“Well, that’s my problem,” I said. “If you find anyone who isn’t Uncle Henry, show me, and I’ll rip them off.””

“These medicines will allow you to come and visit Christ, but you can only stay two hours. Then you have to leave again. This is not the true samadhi. It’s better to become Christ than to visit him – but even the visit of a saint for a moment is useful.” Then he added, “But love is the most powerful medicine.”
For love slowly transforms you into what the psychedelics only let you glimpse.”

About UNDER THE BLANKET

From the publisher's feed

This conscious podcast is inspired by the hippie bible Be Here Now and our blanket wearing guru Maharajji. We speak the unspeakable.
