  • It’s all part of waking up
Venture under Maharajji’s blanket as Marcus Rummery returns to the podcast. We discuss astral planes, the Kali Yuga, and spiritual practices (sadhana).
“I would really like to do sadhana,
but...I’m a teacher now. If I could only finish being a teacher, I could do sadhana.”
BALONEY! You’re either doing sadhana or you’re not. Sadhana is a full time thing that you do because there is nothing else to do. You do it whether you’re teaching, or sitting in a monastery...whether you’re lying in bed, going to the toilet, making love, eating...EVERYTHING is part of waking up.”
    - Ram Dass
Marcus has been creative all of his life. Born to a journalist and scientist, and raised in a community adjacent to a nuclear research facility in rural Manitoba called Pinawa. Marcus’ upbringing was one of dynamic creativity and radioactive inspiration.
Marcus began performing stand-up comedy in 1996 in Ottawa. Then, less than a year later, he came third in Canada’s Funniest New Comic contest. He has performed all across Canada and L.A., headlining in Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, toured the country twice, and been featured on XM Radio as well CBC Radio’s Definitely Not the Opera and Madly Off in All Directions.
In 2002 Marcus became certified to teach hot yoga, a then new practice involving vigorous exercise in an extreme environment where the heat is cranked to 40.6 Celsius and the humidity to 40%. For almost eleven years, ten times a week you could here his inspirational ranting all around Lotus Land until 2014 when he premiered Hot Prana. This new series that he calls the Crossfit of Yoga, was featured in his first teacher training in 2016. A disrupter in the space he later became the first yoga teacher to also sing and play guitar while instructing, a class he calls Cool Qi.
Marcus completed his BA in psychology in 2005 and then two years later the Langara College digital documentary program, and in 2008 finished Big Medicine – The Techno-Shamanism of Frank Ogden. In 2017 he released his magnus opus film Bucket Chemistry, featuring a four-act psychedelic death and rebirth multimedia rock-show. In February 1995, after a life changing psilocybin experience, Marcus began the research that would lead to his interest in Frank’s work when he started investigating psychoactive drugs - culminating in the publication of Shamanic Graffiti in 2016, with the second edition coming out this year. The first edition is featured at the Archives of Psychoactive Substances at Purdue University. In 2021 he began his master’s degree in counseling at Athabasca University.
Fronting the bands Evoke, All Possible Humans and In Defense of Tim Leary Marcus has operated as a vocalist since the beginning. Right now, he is working on his second book Shamanic Enneagram, recording and performing as well as teaching yoga, and continuing his studies in psychology.

  • Machines in the illusion
Venture under Maharajji’s blanket as Rich returns to the show. We discuss being present, the illusion, the sky of awareness, Facebook, the awakening and Joe Rogan, my pretend podcast nemesis, attempts to invade the show with an army of sexist and racist alt-right white men in their 20’s (BROS).
“And every now and then, we remember. We sit down and meditate, or we read Ramakrishna or Ramana Maharshi and suddenly, “Oh yeah, right; whew! That’s what it was about.” And we remember again. And then a moment later, we forget. But what happens is the balance shifts. If we can imagine a wheel whose rim is the cycle of births and deaths, all of the “stuff” of life, conditioned reality, and whose center is perfect flow, formless no-mind, the source, we’ve got one foot with most of our weight on the circumference of the wheel, and one foot tentatively on the center. That’s the beginning of awakening.”

  • You are not the body!
Venture under Maharajji’s blanket as Jason and Baba discuss the body positivity movement, fat-shaming, culture, and the system. We relate it all to our spiritual awakening. Please consider bathing in cosmic giggles as you grok this episode.
“A funny thing about me is that I never get to talking about the body. I write beautiful notes on it, but I never talk about it because I don’t believe anything I say. I’ve said these things before but I’m going to keep saying them until I can hear them. Here’s my predicament: I know damn well that as you age your body becomes more fragile in a lot of different ways. It becomes more vulnerable and it starts decaying, corroding, rusting, holding on, etc. I think one of the most horrendous parts about these physical aspects of aging are people’s reactions to them. See, the reasonable thing would be to hear about all of those conditions and then temper your behavior to say, “Well, I may not have spent much time worrying about my body because I was so in my mind and in my heart up until now. But now I have to realign my forces to spend more time dealing with my body because otherwise that’s going to be the first thing that goes in the system, and then I may have a clear mind but no body left. Or it’ll be a drag, or I’ll have to deal with my intestines, and if I don’t want to have to deal with that give years down the line, maybe I should consider changing my diet now. See, this all seems so reasonable! But that isn’t the way I do it.
I think senility takes place a lot in the mind, and is affected by the way you use your mind. I guess what I’m saying is that I would like to be different than I am, but I’m not yet – because if I don’t eat something I really love because somebody tells me it’s not good for me, I end up hating them and myself – and that can’t be good for my health.
I mean, my father and mother went to Europe in 1933 – the first rush of their success in life they took a trip to Europe on the Queen Mary. And dad came home with all these cases of French wines, which was an important thing that an upwardly mobile person would collect. So then he built a wine cellar in the basement of our very small house, with little wine racks where you store the wine horizontally. And so as I was growing up, on Sundays or on holidays we would have a bottle of wine. And my father, one of his favorite things to do was to go down and enjoy his wine cellar. And he’d walk in there and he’d turn the bottles… but it turns out that just being horizontal and getting turned isn’t sufficient, and more and more of the bottles started to taste like vinegar as we opened them. And I see that as a metaphor, just lying horizontally and turning over now and then isn’t going to do it.
A conscious person maintains the temple in which they want to do their emotional and intellectual work. That’s true, that’s wise, and it’s up to you and me as to how we do it and when we do it. All I can say is the sooner you do it, the better, for the long run, if you’re working for quality of life. Even though what you do now will affect you later, I don’t think anyone should make themselves miserable over it.”

  • Us vs. them?
Venture under Maharajji’s blanket, as Jeff and Baba Here Love have a joyful reunion. We discuss the year 2021 in review, us vs. them issues, politics, progress on the spiritual path and relate it all to our awakening to Oneness.
    “What is the “us?”
Well, what’s your reference group? When does your reference group get to the point where somebody starving in another country becomes us starving as well. And if we’ve got wheat in the middle west, it’s our wheat, so if you are hungry and you’ve got wheat in your hand, you put it in your mouth. It’s not – “We’re giving food to them, those people starving, because it is all us. We are dropping napalm on ourself. And it hurts; it burns. We want to stop the suffering to our reference group. Or maybe just women, if that’s your reference group. What’s your reference group? “I’m a woman.” Right, that’s interesting, and beyond that, here we are.
Who you think you are each day, completely determines the universe you live in.
So, if you are saying, “I am a woman,” then what you are aware of in the universe is that everybody seems to be divided up roughly into men and women. You walk down the street and you see there are so many men and women. You’re aware of, depending on your sexual predisposition, of breasts and groins and things like that. But if you say, “I am someone who is hungry,” your reference group changes again, maybe it becomes broader and you start to move around in these perspectives.“

“For many of us who have come into meditation through psychedelics, the model we had for changing consciousness has been of “getting high”. We pushed away our normal waking state in order to embrace a state of euphoria, harmony, bliss, peace, or ecstasy. Many of us spent long periods of time getting high and coming down. My guru, in speaking about psychedelics, said:
“These medicines will allow you to come and visit Christ, but you can only stay two hours. Then you have to leave again. This is not the true samadhi. It’s better to become Christ than to visit him – but even the visit of a saint for a moment is useful.” Then he added, “But love is the most powerful medicine.”
For love slowly transforms you into what the psychedelics only let you glimpse.”

About UNDER THE BLANKET

From the publisher's feed

This conscious podcast is inspired by the hippie bible Be Here Now and our blanket wearing guru Maharajji. We speak the unspeakable.
