In January 1972, Beverly A. Johnson, a twenty-four-year-old mother of two from Fitchburg, Massachusetts, left her home on Blossom Street while a babysitter stayed with her children. Four months later, two men looking for old bottles found her body in the woods off Needham Road in Westminster.
More than fifty years later, Beverly’s unresolved death still sits between fragments: an early missing notice, conflicting newspaper details, a corrected report about the Buttercup Hill Club, an autopsy limited by decomposition, and a family left without the answer that mattered most.
This revisited episode of Under the Pines rebuilds Beverly’s story from the available public record, family death notice details, local knowledge, and period reporting from the Fitchburg Sentinel. It follows her life before the case: Beverly Dudley of Leominster, a Fitchburg High School student, a young bride, a mother, and a worker at Carol’s Dairy Bar, listed in the paper as Carroll’s Restaurant.
This episode also looks carefully at what can and cannot be said. No public suspect has been identified. No arrest was made. No trial followed. The early report connecting Beverly to the Buttercup Hill Club was later corrected by the newspaper, leaving one of the biggest questions in the case unresolved: where was Beverly really going that night?
