Under the Waves

Andrew and Michelle are covering their most heavy metal episode ever talking about the Pilot Island Lighthouse. This little unassuming lighthouse on a rather small island holds some big and dark secrets. Tune in to find out what diaphones, acid bird droppings, a disgruntled cow, and Death's Door have in common. Ahoy!

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicide, please reach out and get help. Call or text 988 to speak to a qualified individual, You can also go to 988lifeline.org or crisistextline.org. You are worth keeping around and in case no one told you today, we love you and we're proud of you.

We also want to send our support and condolences to those who have lost or been affected by recent, past, ongoing gun violences in America. Please reach out to someone to help you process feelings, talk to a friend, volunteer or show support, and let's use these tragedies to draw us closer together as a country. Wishing everyone healing.

Andrew and Michelle talk about a ship who, before being condemned to the Great Lakes, lived quite the life. The SS Francisco Morazan sailed for 11 different owners, under 6 different country flags all over the world, and took on 8 different names. Come learn what makes this wreck so special and some might even say, a head and shoulders above the rest.

Something about late night recordings really make Andrew and Michelle a bit cooky and boy howdy are they ever for this episode. Join these two for some high quality dad jokes, sibling banter, and learning about a rather leaky, unkempt ship - the Trinidad. From a handsomely and staunchly built marine specimen to needing extra bilge pumps, learn the fateful tale of this late 1800s schooner and the surprise guest appearance from a previous episode!

Andrew and Michelle talk about the Nucleus aka the Bad Luck Barquentine. What happened for her to get this unfortunate nickname? How far out of reach is she now? Tune in this week to find out all of the answers and more! And while we're at it, happy belated one year! Thanks for sticking around through the learning period, the recording under water and from an isolated lighthouse, and for all of the wrecks in-between! We wouldn't be who we are without all of you and never a day goes by that we aren't extremely grateful for this opportunity. Cheers to the next year ahead!

Hello, ahoy, and welcome aboard a very special and super exciting episode of Under the Waves. Andrew and Michelle are joined by Jeff Koch, Coordinator and Program Manager at the Superior Watershed Partnership and Land Conservancy as well as caretaker of the Stannard Rock Light! Jeff has been a part of the SWP for about 9 years and in that time has organized numerous trips out to the Stannard Rock in the name of science and bettering a historical landmark. He talks to us about the importance of conservation efforts for the lakes, how you can get involved (yes, you!), the crazy adventures it sometimes takes just getting to the lighthouse, and so much more. Tune in as we kick off Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend talking with the man, the myth, the legend behind taking care of one of the coolest (and loneliest) lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Anchors away!

Andrew and Michelle continue the Grace Period series with the Grace Patterson. This wily ship almost had a rather short episode until a phenomenal source saved the day at the last moment. Find out more about this accident-prone vessel who remains a bit illusive to this day. Welcome aboard!
