Today’s podcast features my special guest La’Torria Lemon, a young publicist with her own Houston-Atlanta based Lemon Lime Light public relations firm.
She represents celebrities (Beyonce’s BeyGood Foundation), non-profits (United Negro College Fund), faith-based companies, media (Warner Brothers/TNT/OWN), and corporations.
One of her most challenging roles was in June 2020 as the official publicist for George Floyd’s memorial and funeral services in Minnesota, North Carolina, and Houston.
Also, on this podcast, the HollyShorts Film Festival, which is currently going on until November 15, 2020. This year, the Oscar-qualifying event now in its 16th year, is all virtual.
Plus, a music review of Moses Sumney’s latest.

The latest episode features Alyson Williams discussing her illustrious recording career, upcoming projects, women rappers, and much more.
In the late 80s, the Harlem singer became the first female R&B artist signed to the groundbreaking Def Jam rap label. Alyson’s first album, "Raw," garnered several top 5 singles, including slow jam favorite “Just Call My Name.” The album went on to spend over a year on the Billboard charts, met only by Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.”
After leaving Def Jam, the daughter of trumpeter and bandleader Bobby Booker, moved to Columbia records (now Sony) and released her second album. The self-titled release nabbed two top ten hits – “Just My Luck” and “Can’t Have My Man.”
Alyson would go on to release two more albums – in 2004 and 2010.
Before success as a solo artist, she sang background for hitmakers including Melba Moore, Evelyn Champagne King, and Kurtis Blow. Yep, that was Alyson singing the hook on classic Kurtis Blow rap tracks – "Basketball" and "If I Ruled the World."
In addition to a recording career, Alyson enjoyed acting and singing in musical reviews and stage plays both on and off Broadway in shows including “One Mo Time” and the “25th Anniversary Revival of the Wiz." She worked with actors/and singers Lynn Whitfield, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Carl Payne, The Whispers, and Eddie Levert of The O'Jays.
Currently, Alyson has a lot on her plate – working on a new jazz album, an upcoming virtual show honoring her friend and gone-too-soon singer Phyliss Hyman (click here for ticket information), and a radio show on WHCR in New York.

Known as the "trauma psychiatrist," Houston based board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Alauna Curry will join me on today's podcast. With Covid-19 affecting African American and Hispanic communities more than other groups, Dr. Alauna will help us center our thoughts and minds so that we can make it through the pandemic and more. Also, hear her conversation about “mask rage” with conservative radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh.

This podcast features Cheryl L. Bedford, whose name should be in the dictionary next to Hollywood Diversity and Inclusion.
Bedford is a longtime outspoken Hollywood producer, who has always advocated for fairness. Best known as a producer of the still talked about 2011 “Dark Girls” documentary on colorism, her fearless, passionate voice has started the proactive organization Women of Color Unite. The group - for Women of Color behind the scenes and in front of the camera - addresses the dismal numbers and treatment of us – Women of Color - in entertainment.
In addition to discussing Women of Color Unite, also known as WOCU (https://wocunite.com/), we discuss The JTC List (See WOCU website for more info) – a database of Women of Color in entertainment. Plus, we’ll hear about the successful mentorship initiative #StartWith8Hollywood (https://www.startwith8hollywood.com/), a partnership with The Bitch Pack, headed by Thuc Nguyen, that’s shaking up Hollywood gatekeepers.
Hold on to your hats and seats because this interview is lit with hard-hitting, in your face facts.

In part 2 of my interview with Dr. Corey Hartman, a board-certified dermatologist practicing in Birmingham, Alabama, we discuss how derms address more than just skin issues. Derms can be seen for concerns about nails, hair, and much more. We also talk about when to see a dermatologist, skin cancer in the black community, and the epidemic rates of black women losing their hair. Plus, how to really know if a "protective hairstyle" is helping your hair, how wigs and hair glue may equal no edges, and finding a dermatologist that can properly treat African Americans and other people of color.
Black Derm Directory https://www.blackdermdirectory.com/ was mentioned by Dr. Hartman as a resource to find black dermatologists nationally and outside of the U.S.

In this episode, get ready for Part 1 of a two part episode with Dr. Corey Hartman. I used to babysit the now board certified dermatologist while he was a young boy living down the street from me in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Hartman, who is African American, has his own practice (Skin Wellness Dermatology - https://skinwellness.com/) in Birmingham, Alabama and discusses his medical school journey as the only black person in his program at University of Alabama. We also do a deep dive into running a business in the Deep South and treating patients, especially black people and people of color. Additionally, I’ll review the Amazon Prime series "Upload" starring former Prince protege Andy Allo and there's the Interview Throwback with South African singer/musician Jonathan Butler.
