1 hr 30 min - Gospel Identity Motivates Godly Obedience 1 JOHN 2:12-17
In 1 John 2:12-17, we see how our gospel identity in Christ motivates us not to love the world.
The first part is verses 12-14, which focus on gospel truths about our identity in Christ. John uses these to bring confidence and assurance of our identity in Christ. These gospel truths cannot be taken away from us. They don’t depend on our feelings. They are genuine, bona fide gospel blessings in which we can rest confidently.
The second part, verses 15-17, focuses on our obedience to living out our identity in Christ.
Do not love the world is in the imperative mood—a strong command for us to obey. Here’s John’s point about the order in which he writes this material. He wants us to understand that being comes before doing. Or our identity comes before our obedience.
In other words, your motivation, power, and grace to obey Jesus come first from your security and identity in Him. Because you are forgiven, and because you know Jesus, and because you have victory over Satan, you can obey Him and not love the world.You obey and do not love the world out of the overflow of who you already are in Christ.

Verse 4: Whoever says I know Him

These are all synonyms for what it means to be a Christian. A Christian knows Christ, abides in Christ, and walks in the light of Christ.If you claim these three descriptions as a believer in Jesus, there must be some concrete evidence or fruit to support your claim.

Dr. Sean Cole continues the teaching series through the 1689 Second London Baptist Confession.
This chapter addresses the question: Is God sovereign not only over those who are saved but also over HOW, WHEN, and WHERE they are saved? Is God sovereign over the worldwide preaching of the gospel?
What is the eternal destiny of those who have never heard the gospel or exercised conscious faith in Christ alone?
Three traditional classifications:
- Exclusivism: No one is saved without personal conscious faith in Christ alone, which comes through the special revelation of the gospel.
- Inclusivism—Everyone who obeys the general revelation they have based on their conscience is saved through Jesus, whether they actually repent and believe in Him. They may be saved without even knowing about Jesus. A person’s faith in general revelation is enough to save them.
- Pluralism—everyone who obeys their particular religion is saved, for each religion supplies an independent road to the ultimate reality. If you are a sincere Buddhist, then you will go to heaven for being as good as you can with your religion. If you’re a sincere Muslim, it’s the same thing. The problem is: How do you define “sincere”?
The Confession and, more importantly, the Bible, especially Romans 1, teach the exclusivist view of salvation.
