This passage includes the third of Luke's Christmas songs announcing the birth of Christ. We see the angel’s song Gloria in Excelsis Deo, which in Latin means “Glory to God in the highest!”

Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply, Echoing their joyous strains

The angels display God's shining glory for the shepherds to see and hear.

Dr. Sean Cole concludes the teaching from the 1689 Second London Baptist Confession focusing on Chapter 31: The State of Humanity after Death and the Resurrection of the Dead and Chapter 32: The Last Judgment.

Luke gives us the second of our Four Songs of Christmas here in what has historically been called The Benedictus, Latin for “Blessed.” Zechariah provides us with the THREE major or primary elements, aspects, or truths of the Christian faith.

In other words, this song, this blessing, gives us the heart of what it means to be a Christian and how we understand our faith

Guilt, Grace, and Gratitude.  

The Heidelberg Catechism is one of the most heartwarming and accessible of the Reformed statements of faith, and Question 2 addresses these three issues:

Question: What must you know to live and die in the joy of this comfort?

Answer: Three things: first, how great my sin and misery are; second, how I am set free from all my sins and misery; third, how I am to thank God for such deliverance.

What happens when you begin to doubt your salvation? Or when your conscience accuses you that you’re a miserable failure beyond recovery.What happens when you have a restless, guilty, anxious heart that wonders if you’re doing enough to keep yourself in God’s good graces? In his book "Saved by Grace: The Holy Spirit's Work of Calling and Regeneration," Herman Bavinck interacts with what he calls the semi-Pelagian error of the Arminians. The error is that a sinner can believe in Christ simply by the outward call of the gospel. Interestingly, this is precisely what Provisionism teaches. Dr. Sean Cole shows how the arguments Bavinck made against the Arminians of his day can also be made against the Provisionists of our day. What is the nature of saving faith? Is the external outward call sufficient to enable a positive response to Jesus or does the Holy Spirit need to do an immediate, internal, supernatural work on the soul of a sinner to bring them from spiritual death to spiritual life?
