We acknowledge that the sound quality is not good in this interview. #Sorry! An edited transcript can be found here if that helps: https://www.greenleft.org.au/video/understanding-mikhail-gorbachev-and-his-legacy
Mikhail Gorbachev is undoubtedly a significant historical figure but mainstream media commentary on his death is wanting.
Some see Gorbachev as being an enemy of socialism, responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union. Others see Gorbachev as someone who attempted to bring about necessary reform to the Stalinist system.
Green Left speaks to Renfrey Clark who was Green Left's full time Moscow-based correspondent covering the Soviet Union and then the restoration of capitalism between 1990 and 1998 about Gorbachev and his legacy.
We acknowledge that this was produced on stolen Aboriginal land. We express solidarity with ongoing struggles for justice for First Nations people and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
