April 20, 2017 Episode 19: Women & Weed
Happy 4/20! With the new legalization timeline from Trudeau, we felt it was the perfect time to discuss women & weed. In this episode of Underwire, we hear a variety of voices from the members of TOFemCo alongside some knowledgeable counterparts. We go in-depth about the multifaceted world of weed – the stigma, uses, preferences and experiences we’ve had. Peggy and her friend Roberta join us all the way from their trip in South America to talk about how weed has helped their anxiety, but can also be a social activity. Frida chats with our friend Trish (who you heard on Episode 15: Black Girl Magic) about their very different experiences with weed, as well as Trish’s take on the culture from the perspective of a Caribbean woman. Also, did you know it’s poetry month? For this episode's pop culture pick, Karin shares some of her favourite poetry by (INSERT POET pls @erin) to celebrate the month. Anne is honoured to induct Attorney Lauren Vázquez into our League of Extraordinary Women. Vázquez is the badass behind Fired Up Lawyer, a team specializing in helping cannabis businesses navigate the sometimes murky legal world of weed. She's also a social entrepreneur who has worked for over a decade to end cannabis prohibition and advance alternatives to the failed war on drugs. Vásquez served as a Senior Advisor and Statewide Organizer for the Prop 64 campaign. She has advised numerous cannabis companies and organizations and has worked with cities and counties for years to develop local licensing for cannabis businesses. Plus, she’s a Professor at Oaksterdam University and previously served as the National Deputy Director of Communications for the Marijuana Policy Project. Wow. For this episode of Underwire, Hermione and Georgia discuss the rewarding, but often difficult practice of self-care and its even more elusive sister, self-love.
Self-care is always beneficial, but it is especially essential for those who do a lot of emotional labour. In response to the fact that we are now living in the darkest political timeline, many people are becoming involved in activism for the first time and current activists are putting in even more hours fighting the good fight. With social media lending a hand, many are experiencing serious burnout, and finding a way to practice self-care is on everyone’s mind. So what exactly is self-care, what is it not, and why is it so damn hard sometimes?

By sharing with you their own struggles and triumphs with self-love, making a list of “ingredients” for good, effective self-care, and talking through the benefits and barriers associated with some popular self-care methods, Georgia and Hermione hope to dip their toes into the muddy waters of this complicated subject and hopefully, come away a little clearer.

In celebration of Buffy the Vampire Slayers 20th anniversary, the women of Underwire are professing their love/hate relationship with a show we once thought annihilated the patriarchy. The popular American TV series turned comic book, now on its 11th season, has been known for its unequivocally feminist ideals and putting women first. However, like many hit TV shows, Buffy failed in many ways to represent a diverse and intersectional cast. ToFemCo members Kaylee and Virginia address several issues we unveiled in one of our favourite TV chronicles, and how we came to acknowledge our enjoyment of something problematic.

February 23, 2017 Episode 15: Black Girl Magic

This week on Underwire, we're celebrating Black History Month and Black Girl Magic.
Black Girl Magic was defined by CaShawn Thompson in 2013 to empower black women. Visit her online shop if you want to support the #BlackGirlsAreMagic movement.
As Huffington Post’s Julee Wilson brilliantly explains in this video, Black Girl Magic is a term used to illustrate the universal awesomeness of black women. It can be used to celebrate the general awe-inspiring nature of women like Serena Williams or Viola Davis, but it can also be used for everyday moments of magic, like wearing natural hair or killing it at work.
The title for this episode perfectly reflects the unique perspectives of our five black contributors this week: D, Trish, Catriona Smart (Coco & Cowe), Amal and Sedina Fiati (artist and activist). Each woman represents the smart, magical awesomeness of black women in their own different ways.
