The doctrine of the Trinity is a foundational doctrine of orthodox Christianity. And yet, most christians would probably struggle to articulate it without actually stumbling into a heretical view of God's nature. As christians, we should desire to know God more, by studying all he has revealed to us about himself in scripture.

Elder, Pastor, Shepherd, Bishop, Presbyter...

What do these words mean? Are they different titles/functions? What are the requirements to hold such a position? Many of us have been in church all our lives and don't have a clue what the bible says about those tasked as "under shepherds" for Christ's flock. Let's dig into the scriptures for some answers!

As useful as those may be, they must all be tested and measured against the infallible, inerrant, God-breathed scripture. The Westminster confession of faith puts it this way:

“The whole counsel of God, concerning all things necessary for his own glory, man’s salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly set down in scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit, or traditions of men.”

Tongues, interpretation, prophecy, and healing... Miraculous signs and wonders mentioned throughout scripture, and particularly in the new testament. Are they for today? Did they cease with the apostles, when the canon was complete, or some other time for some other reason? What do the scriptures teach us? Is there a definitive answer?
