  • Ep. 2 Part 1: Shearing

Caperton meets fiber artist Jamie Root at Ecclectics Gallery, an artist coop in Kansas City,

MO, after coming across a table of her beautiful, whimsically felted hats. The next Spring,

Caperton meets Jamie at the farm she leases in Cass County, MO to watch Jamie shear a

couple of sheep. Caperton shows up with a story mapped out to follow a clump of wool

from shearing, to processing, dying, and to Jamie felting another hat. Jamie would take that

hat back to the artist coop, and Caperton would interview the person who’d buy it about

making a purchase of locally made, wearable art. But, soon after arriving, Caperton

becomes aware of the story that wants to be told as Jamie shares how science guides her

flock and field management practices, plus she tells several fun sheep stories.

  • Part 4: Coral Farming at CoraVita

CoralVita is a for-profit, coral farm that restores and preserves coral reefs around the world. CoralVita strives to raise climate-resilient corals in their on-land, farm tanks. These many coral species have been through the micro-fragmentation process, which creates cloned coral masses that are then planted in the oceans near where their host corals were harvested. This protects biodiversity and coastal communities.

Caperton visits CoralVita, the coral farm on Grand Bahama. While one of the interns, all of whom are paid, tours Caperton through the farm, she explains the process of micro-fragmentation, and how this method produces more healthy corals to be implanted into the sea.
