This sermon on the sixth commandment lays the groundwork for why murder is a sin by demonstrating that first, murder is a sin because God is life.  Secondly, murder is an attack on God's image bearer.  Contrasting instrumental value with intrinsic value, murder is always wrong, no matter how it manifests itself whether in anger towards a brother, abortion or euthanasia.  But none of these are the worst possible sin.  The worst possible sin is the murder of the Son of God.  His death on the cross for sinners makes forgiveness of sin, including the sin of murder possible and available.

We associate the fifth commandment with kids. Though there is truth to that this commandment has so much to say about adult children.

God mandated that his people take a day off each week. But what was that to accomplish. Our message will explore significance of the fourth commandment.

The third commandment is to not take the name of the Lord in vain. At different points in history God revealed Himself through His name. As God Almighty to Abraham, as YHWH to Moses and the children of Israel, and as Jesus to us in the New Testament. However, many times we take His name in vain and do not realize the power, authority and richness of His name. Through this message we will learn about the uniqueness of His name and the power that goes along with it. 

The Lord did not want the children of Israel worshipping idols like the nations around them. Neither did he want them making idols to represent him. He revealed himself through his voice and through his word. The climax of this was the incarnation of Jesus Christ as the word became flesh and dwelt among us. Today, Jesus should be the focus of our worship, not some idol, whether it is physical or within our hearts. 

The commandments rightly start with God and how we are to relate to him.  In a very real sense this commandment is what all of Scripture is about.

The end of Mark's gospel is not the end of the Good News but the beginning.

Most of us have a conception of what greatness is. Jesus turns the tables in a very unconventional redefinition of true greatness.

As Jesus was without sin he was able to stand in our place before God.
