We are better together than we could ever be apart. There are enumerable tales, and unquestionable examples that prove this to be true. When we can get past ourselves​, and see the power resident in working as a unit, unimaginable possibilities exist.

But very often we let individuality undermine the power of “WE.” Very often, we allow our own agenda or goals or perspective or PAST to blind us to the possibility of contributing to the greater good and greater goals able to be accomplished when “WE” work as a “WE.” In nearly every endeavor imaginable, We > Me. And though a multitude of cultural examples exist, from team sports, to military campaigns, to your loved one’s conspiring to hook you up with random people, Church should be the place that this sentiment is most readily displayed.

We all have thought and said that we are going to church. The Church was never meant to be a place; it has always been a people. Yes, the church exists in beautiful tension. It is a messy movement. And it is most certainly a Transcendent gathering. But it is the people, not the place, that make it so. Why should we gather with God's people? There is a special grace in the transcendent experience of regularly gathering together with God's people, in God's name. Transcendent, meaning beyond or above the range of normal human experience; surpassing the ordinary; exceptional. Incomparable, matchless, unrivaled, beyond compare, and of God. And it is this grace supersedes even language and genetics, overcomes anxiety, emboldens the meek, strengthens the faithless, and calls back the wandering. And it is available to all of us, if we see the gathering of God's people rightly.

What is the Church? Now, some of us grew up in church our entire lives, and so it was just there, a part of the family rhythm. A part of the weekly routine. Some of us came to faith late in life, and with no one to tell us exactly what the church is meant to be, we just jumped into the stream of what was “normal,” any pushback or questions we had signaled division rather than genuine curiosity. But most of us, whether we grew up in church or we’re experiencing church for the first time, have reduced church to a weekly routine that will have little impact on this world.
