We start far too fast, and give up far too quickly in so many of life’s endeavors. Unfortunately the Christian life, which should be characterized by steady, enduring growth and change, often ends up among that which is abandoned—in whole or in part—as time passes, gratification comes slowly, difficulty arises and we tire. But starting fast and falling short is not what God intended. This passage in Hebrews tells us that God calls us to take the long view. Lasting change is a lifelong endeavor, and we must fight to endure to the end. And scripture tells us exactly how to get on with it. This week Pastor Léonce unpacks Hebrews 12 to show us what the scriptures have to say about the long walk that characterizes the life of the disciple of Jesus.

No matter what someone says about who they are, or how they've changed, it’s human nature to look for evidence of that change, not only in others, but in ourselves. ​This is undeniable. It’s what we do. ​We need clear evidence that communicates to us—and those around us—the actuality of our change. ​

This is widely understood well beyond “church” circles, right? In school, the evidence of change is knowledge gained. In business, the evidence of growth or change is often a promotion or acquisition of some kind. This week we Pastor Léonce shows us in Galatians what the evidence of the true change should be.

Growth in godliness involves both right belief AND obedient action. Godly habits do not simply appear. Paul goes on to compare physical training with spiritual. Training our bodies has some benefit, but physical training is limited to just that—the physical dimensions of life. Godliness ​on the other hand, penetrates every aspect of life: our view of self, marriage,
parenting, business, school, environmental outlook, relationships; Nothing escapes godliness; it pervades everything. It gives true life. If we take the scriptures as true, how do we go about this training? What are the means,
the instruments of our exercise? Well God has given us tools, often referred to as Spiritual Disciplines, that help us to train ourselves for godliness. They help us to cultivate that newness God has worked in us.

The life of the mind is an essential dimension of progressing in our new nature. Regrettably though I believe it fair to say that after we experience this irrevocable newness from God, we often live on autopilot, failing to thoughtfully approach how we walk in our newness. You know this to be true. We believe in Jesus, yes. We believe that we’re new. But we challenge and diminish the effects of that belief by failing to consider how we think about God, His scriptures, or this life.

As one writer for Forbes magazine put it, “Self-improvement, or at least the desire for it, is a shared American hobby.” It’s the reason that every year starts the same, with so many of us—estimates say more than 40% of people in the U.S.—making New Year’s resolutions.

With the majority of these resolutions being abandoned shortly after beginning, the question that arises is, how do we actually change? Join us as we begin a new series on what it takes to actually change.
