  • The UC Merced Student Sustainability Proposal Writing Contest: Eva Fernanda Ordonez - Improved Fleetmatic Mobile System
Eva Fernanda Ordonez is a third-year student at UC Merced and wants to help students plan their daily commute to campus or the community. She used online surveys to study the barriers to sustainable solutions for travel and why students are not using the current system. By remodeling the Fleetmatic mobile app, Ordonez says that more people will commute together by bus, reducing individual vehicle emissions, improving air quality and student life, if the app and bus schedule is upgraded. • Uncovering the Mystique of the John Muir Shelter
UC Berkeley alumnus Doug Harnsberger was hiking along California’s scenic John Muir Trail a few years ago when he came across a stone hut at the top of 11,955-foot Muir Pass, inside Kings Canyon National Park. Almost as soon as he returned home to Pennsylvania, he started learning as much as he could about the hut. The effort took him to UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library, where he found the original 1930 blueprint for the building by Henry Gutterson, a 1905 graduate of Berkeley who was commissioned to build the hut by the Sierra Club. • Olivier Messiaen's Un sourire - La Jolla Symphony and Chorus
The title "Un Sourire" translates as "A smile." Olivier Messiaen, who composed the piece to mark the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death in 1991, did not attempt to imitate Mozart's style. Rather, he based his piece on the knowledge that Mozart's music was not necessarily a direct expression of his emotional life. Messiaen fashioned his gentle homage to reflect that aspect of Mozart's music combined with his own love of birdsong. Series: "La Jolla Symphony & Chorus" [Show ID: 33851]

  • Responsive Low-Carbon Buildings: Mary Ann Piette
Our homes and buildings consume huge amounts of energy – up to 40 percent of all energy use in the US. Research at Berkeley Lab has greatly boosted energy efficiency in buildings but the challenge now is not just how much energy we use, but when we use it. We need to shift loads to times when there are plenty of renewables in our electric system, and reduce load at other times of the day. New technologies will get our energy production and our energy consumption talking to each other. Series: "Cal Future Forum: Our Changing World" [Show ID: 33078]

His group then synthesizes the materials, and finally makes devices to test in the real world.
