Your mental well being is always an important part of your overall health, and this is especially true for university students. Mental health resources aren’t always useful on campus and can come with many limitations to these resources. Taking a deep look at a few University of Kentucky student groups, we analyzed the student groups’ beliefs, fears, and values of the campus’ mental healthcare. First generation students is one of the four groups we will be focusing on. Along with starting a new journey they also have to face the pressure that society and their families place on them for being first generation. We will also be focusing on international students here. There are many factors that can influence the thoughts of international students to have a negative connotation toward mental health services, and cultural stigma appears to be one of them.
LGBT+ students face many specific mental health stressors, and many specific mental healthcare obstacles. All of these groups are important pieces of the student body at the University of Kentucky, and all of these groups have their own important values and beliefs. College can be a stressful time among most college students and the prevalence of these mental health issues are rising. It is known that getting involved around campus such as Greek organizations can help with these issues and create a positive experience for students around the University of Kentucky campus. This is why Greek life students are another group that we will be taking a look at during this episode.
