A partnership between the Alliance of Police Accountability and the PIEL Centre, University of East London. The conference delved into important discussions surrounding the experiences of Black children in their interactions with the Metropolitan Police. The day was solution focussed seeking ways to protect Black children and young people from racial profiling and adultification and to support Black children's experience of systemic police racism. Ensuring a trauma-informed approach is reflected in safeguarding policies is critical. March 28, 202426: When teachers experience racism in schools: An interview with Miss A*** TRIGGER WARNING *** This episode contains references to personal experiences of racism in schools. Welcome to Episode 26 of the Unlearnsomething podcast. Today, we have a candid interview with Miss A. Miss A is an expert primary school teacher, education consultant and university lecturer in teacher training. She shares her experiences of racism in her place of employment and how she took action. We are so grateful that Miss A wanted to share her experiences and we hope that this episode will help others who might be experiencing the same discrimination. Racism in schools in entirely unacceptable and teachers need to be safeguarded too. Schools have a duty of care to protect all staff as well. This is a real person's lived experience and not up for debate. This is why we admonish anyone who refuses to acknowledge that racism exists in our communities all up and down the country. March 23, 202425: Celebrating the BLAM book launch in Birmingham, UKWelcome to episode 25 of the Unlearnsomething podcast. Thank you for listening and supporting us. We are enjoying the process, meeting some wonderful people and hopefully sparking some conversations in your classrooms! This week we share our reflections on our road trip up to Birmingham for the BLAM book launch. Another bonus is that Miss S was part of a Black educators panel on why the BLAM resources are so necessary. Miss O was cheering and whooping in the audience and making a fuss. BLAM is an organisation led by young Black women (big up Ife and the team) that has published educational resources to support the teaching of Black history for 7 - 11 year olds. These books are best for KS2. Not only are they publishing educational resources, BLAM are community advocates, fund and provide enrichment programs promoting Black British history for children and young people AND if that wasn't enough, there is a service that provide Black people access to therapy with certified Black therapists. Truly transformative! We loved spending time with these motivated and inspirational people and had a great time doing the quiz too. Do you know what two twos means? Miss S did, Miss D had no clue.
