Being a first-generation student and moving away from another place can be somewhat stressful. Maya Ellsworth, a first-generation sophomore, tells all about her transition from her small high school in Hawaii to the huge campus of UNLV. She talks about her work as a peer mentor and how she's motivating students to ask questions and connecting them to the necessary resources. Maya shares a personal experience that inspired her to become a nurse and discusses overcoming obstacles as she navigated college life. She shares how living in the dorms her first year allowed her to make friends and come out of her shell, along with how the library was a hotspot. Lastly, she shares her experience as a first-year, tips, and resources that helped her, and how the Aloha spirit powers her social outlook.

Life is very unpredictable, and a bunch of curveballs may be thrown at your way which could throw you off track, but not this first-generation student. In this interview, Julieann Cruz shares her experiences of dealing with life’s unpredictable moments and conquering through those curveballs to reach her achievements and goals in life. Julieann came all the way from Guam and was originally set to attend college in Portland, but things took a turn when she found out she was going to be a mother. Julieann found herself in Las Vegas on her way to Portland and decided to start her college journey at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN). She had completed her Associate's Degree in Business at CSN and she is here now at UNLV pursuing a Bachelor’s in Finance. Her journey was not always easy, but she overcame all the curveballs thrown her way and continues to be a Groundbreaker here at UNLV as she tackles the challenges of being a First-Generation Student from Guam and a loving mother! As Julieann Cruz stated, “Take every opportunity and every risk even if it doesn’t work out for you because you can always learn something from it!”

Julieann Cruz

Deciding when to start college does not necessarily mean starting right after high school. In this podcast, we spoke with Heidi and Aldo, who are both nontraditional first-generation college students, and the odds were stacked against them. Heidi and Aldo have proven that age and other hurdles do not matter when it comes to pursuing your dreams. What truly counts is your passion for the career path of your choice, the dedication you are willing to apply yourself, and making the necessary sacrifice in order to succeed in your academic endeavors.  Heidi has had a passion for nursing while Aldo has had his, in psychology and is evident throughout his research at the university. Although they may be at different chapters in their academic careers, they certainly have similar journeys and stories like choosing to relocate to Las Vegas from California to pursue their career goals.  One of the most important messages that they shared on this recording towards other first-generation students and perhaps all students, in general, is to not be afraid of being told, "no."  They believe that you should always ask questions and not fear the possibility of rejection because another door can always open up for you.

In this first of five-episode series, we are highlighting the experiences of our first-generation students here at UNLV.  Being a first generation college student can be quite intimidating as it breaches unfamiliar territory. Krickett and Brady are both UNLV students walking down this path with the goal of turning the tide in their respective families, and it has been a stressful journey walking on this unpaved road. For many people, education is one of their biggest regrets, and Krickett and Brady aspire to finish their academia and establish financial stability with their degrees. In this podcast, they talk about the stress and frustration that comes with figuring out the mechanics of college, financial aid, college resources, and adjusting to remote learning and employment with the pandemic in addition to finding these resources on their own, with the added pressure of being role models for their families. Being a UNLV Groundbreaker takes shape in different ways, leading everyone towards a different journey. We personally believe Kricekett and Brady are doing groundbreaking things in our community while being groundbreakers in their own families.
