Seeing ourselves clearly as animals among animals does not reduce us—it dissolves illusion. It brings humility, clarity, and a return to reality as it is, not as the mind wants it to be.

This is not an attack on belief, but an invitation to honesty.

In this episode, I share the timeless encounter between Alexander the Great and Diogenes the Cynic — two men who stood on opposite ends of ambition. Alexander had conquered nations; Diogenes had conquered himself.

When Alexander told Diogenes, “If I were not Alexander, I would wish to be Diogenes,” he was admitting a truth he could never escape: all his victories still could not give him the freedom this homeless philosopher carried in his empty hands.

And Diogenes’ reply — “If I were not Diogenes, I would still wish to be Diogenes” — reveals a man so complete within himself that nothing in the world could tempt him.

This story exposes the meaninglessness behind most of our pursuits. We chase success, status, wealth, admiration, but when we finally get what we’re running after… and then what?

There is always another mountain, another hunger, another emptiness waiting.

The illusion of “becoming” is created by perception. We think something new has entered, or something old has been lost, but in reality, nothing ever enters and nothing ever leaves. Just as waves rise and fall on the ocean without ever adding to or taking away from the ocean itself, so too does every experience rise and fall within existence.

When you internalize this truth—not just as an idea but as a lived understanding—the grip of suffering weakens. The fear of loss, the endless chase for more, the anxiety of change, all begin to dissolve. You see that life is complete, always moving, but never lacking.

This is the doorway to peace: knowing that all becoming is illusion, and all that is, already is.
