Ellie Cheesman is an independent filmmaker residing in Port Lincoln. Her latest film Womenarch, was supported by IAF, The South Australian Government & Country Arts SA. The film explores the idea of a young person’s first period. In her words, "‘Womenarche’ is an attempt to soften the menarche experience; to destigmatise it & to encourage those who go through adolescent physical changes, to respect each other & treat themselves with gentleness & love.” It won and was selected for festivals in Berlin, Paris and Italy. A dance teacher as well, Ellie is an all-round creative being. She has had a unique and exciting life, living in regional Australia, studying cinema abroad in France, and more! I can’t wait to chat to her about her experience making a film that garnered the support of multiple organisations, and why she chooses to create regionally in Port Lincoln.

Elvy-Lee was trained Flinders Drama Centre, and made her main-stage debut in Single Asian Female for the State Theatre Company of South Australia. In a city where acting is not often seen as a career choice, it will be really interesting to speak to Elvy-Lee about what life is like after acting school in our city, what the biggest lessons she has learned are, and what her plans are for the future! Elvy-Lee’s experience working on Single Asian Female will be super interesting considering the play’s popularity, and hearing her talk about the ups and downs of being in her first ever main-stage play may resonate with many of you as fellow emerging creatives experiencing your own firsts.

Char & Josh are the creators of independent magazine, Nothin Special. Based online and in print in select stores, the magazine aims to highlight what’s on in Adelaide, particularly in the local music scene. They do band profiles, gig guides, new local music drop lists, artist features and so much more. Their team has expanded, as well as their content, to include four people! I am inspired by the dedication of these two creatives to bring something so full of life into fruition, in a time where people are hyper-critical of the future of print and written media. Listen on to hear about what Char and Josh have envisioned for Nothin Special, and what it is like to run an independent magazine in Adelaide.

Chantal Leondhart is a watercolour and illustration artist from Kangaroo Island. At just 20 years old, she opened her own studio art gallery, Bloom By The Ocean. In conjunction with selling her art, calendars and prints, Chantal also runs workshops and art courses in her studio. Chantal brings the Kangaroo Island community a fresh, young voice in the local art scene, and provides opportunities for young people to express their creativity. I’m so excited to interview an artist who is building their career regionally - in the place where I myself also grew up. What are the challenges of being a rural creative and what can we as creatives learn from someone like Chantal who has fearlessly shown herself as a self-starter not afraid to reach for the stars.
