Can you feel it? Well, if you don't live in New Orleans right now, maybe not but LIVE IT vicariously through me and my family! Douglas and my oldest daughter LOVE Jazz Fest. Me, you may ask? Nope. I went back 13 years ago to surprise my sweet mama! We took her to see Al Green and it was epic. It was hot. It was super bright and my skin turned 7 shades of red. I'm good on that, but I LOVE to see the happiness flow through my family and the rest of partakers. 

This year, I thought it would be super cool to welcome the King of Food Reviews and All things NOLA! Who none other than NOLA.COM's inspirational food and culture writer, Ian McNulty! And y'all... he is the REAL DEAL.

Foodies are intimidating, usually. Remember that guy that would come to review  the food in the Disney movie Ratatouille? Ok- well that is NOT Ian. I was able to sit down and really hear the passion in his voice and the love in his heart for New Orleans. 

Ian McNulty has been writing about the life and culture of New Orleans since 1999 as a reporter, columnist, and author. He is a staff writer for the New Orleans Advocate, where he focuses on the food culture of one of the world's great food cities, and his radio commentaries air weekly on the New Orleans NPR affiliate. He is author of A Season of Night: New Orleans Life after Katrina and Louisiana Rambles: Exploring America's Cajun and Creole Heartland, both published by University Press of Mississippi. HAPPY NATIONAL CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK DAY!

As you probably can tell, your papa is pretty excited about this one. Knowing personally the hard work and dedication it takes to create a children's book really helps me appreciate this day. When I wrote our books, I wanted to literally shrink down to the size of a kid and create a conversation with them, allowing them to create their own questions; giving them the control  to hopefully allow light bulbs to turn on for both child and parent at the time when their bedroom lights turn off and night lights brighten the room right before bed.

Dr. Ginsberg is board certified in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine and has been on staff at Ochsner since 1987. He served as both the Section Head of neonatal medicine at Ochsner and the Medical Director of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center from 1989 until 2021. Dr. Ginsberg managed the team at Ochsner that took care of babies during Hurricane Katrina. Currently he is Medical Director of the NICU at Ochsner Kenner Medical Center. Dr. Ginsberg is the Founder and Medical Director of Mothers Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist and is a member of the Standards Committee for the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. He has written chapters for medical textbooks on neonatology and has published scientific medical in articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, Pediatrics, Journal of Perinatology and Clinics in Perinatology. 

Fully accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist was Louisiana’s first human milk bank and the 24th nonprofit milk bank in the United States. Preterm infants are at risk for a condition called necrotizing enterocolitis, which results in inflamed intestines, bacterial infection and damage to the colon and intestines. Without proper care, the infant may die.

Pasteurized donor human milk helps offset these potential dangers. Unfortunately, some mothers of preterm infants cannot produce their own milk. That’s where Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana steps in.As of August 2020, Louisiana provides Medicaid coverage for using pasteurized donor human milk in a hospital. In 2022, Louisiana legislators approved inpatient and outpatient coverage for pasteurized donor human milk.

Brad also talks to us about his latest venture with his inspirational wife, Jefferson Parrish Council Person, Arita Bohannan. Over 700 children enter the foster care system every single day. 

Think about that.                                                                                                                Most are given a trash bag to carry their belongings...                                                    Think about that.             

Think about how it must feel to ask a stranger for their toothpaste. The overwhelming sad and difficult emotions for each of these babies, toddlers, and teens must feel every day. The youth are in these situations because of adults that have FAILED THEM. 

It DOES NOT have to be this way! Last year, we welcomed Comfortcases.org to New Orleans to pack cases filled with all of the personal items these kids need as they navigate this journey. 300 cases were packed, filled and sent HERE LOCALLY in South Louisiana! 

This year, I want to make it a LAW requiring it to be ILLEGAL to put these children's belongings into a trash bag. These babies deserve DIGNITY. So let's make that happen! 

In the coming days, I will create a CALL TO ACTION and petition for EVERYONE to sign and then, I will send it to my friends at New Orleans City Hall, Baton Rouge and beyond to get this on the table and FUNDED!

Did you TASTE dat?! Breads on Oak is a bakery and café in New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States that specializes in organic ingredients, breads, vegan cuisine, and a café style menu of breakfast and lunch food offerings. There are two locations, the original bakery on Oak Street and a second location on Carondelet Street, which opened in 2020. Upon its opening in 2012, Breads on Oak was the first bakery and café in New Orleans to use only organic ingredients. The bakery has garnered significant acclaim over the years. There have been points in this show's journey that make me stop in my tracks. From being called down by George Gray from The Price is Right, to cracking jokes with the Genie from Broadway's Aladdin. 

Today, on this Valentine's Day, I am l left with that feeling again. I am pinching myself to see if I am dreaming. Crazy enough, I am not!
