Unsolicited feedback? Thanks but no thanks.

Listen Later

There are two players in the volley of unsolicited feedback, the giver and the receiver. If you're the receiver, you need a way to siphon out the feedback that doesn't work for you and hold onto the helpful nuggets that do help. Warning - those are most likely rare if you didn't ask for them in the first place. You also can tell the giver that you're not taking "constructive criticism" at the moment.

As for the givers, stop and ask yourself: Did this person show me in any way that they needed my personal opinion? And am I sure the person I'm freely giving feedback to actually respects, wants, and needs my opinion? The answer may be humbling.

In our own conversation volley, we talk about ways that receivers can handle the givers and their feedback, and how givers can be more respectful of the receiver's boundaries.
