The Case of The Colwick Murders And The Subsequent Tragedies
News of the Times Episode 389 | 1844
In today’s episode it is 1844 Nottinghamshire. Mrs Saville, along with her three children, are on day release from the workhouse and in search of her husband who is lodging with a friend.
Mrs Saville has heard about his friendly relations with a girl from the neighbouring village and wishes to confront him about it.
The husband and wife eventually meet, the children are happy to see their father.
They take a walk into the local woods, the young son on the shoulders of his father, William Saville.
The mother and children do not come out of the woods alive.
This extraordinary case made front page news in the national papers. As terrible as the tragedy was, it was compounded by events that happened afterwards. That event, which we cover at the end of the episode in the “further particulars” segment, was so egregious, it was discussed in parliament.
The case of the Colwick murders and the subsequent tragedies is today’s episode from 1844 Colwick near Nottingham
Hosted by Robin Coles.
