The United Nations is warning that the response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo could run out of money within weeks. The UN is appealing for an additional one-point-one billion dollars, to prevent an already fast-growing epidemic from becoming a catastrophe. Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres says the outbreak is spreading faster than the international effort to contain it, with more than 2,700 people already dead. Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports.

Seventy years on - and the struggle may have change but the work is far from over. That's the message from the last surviving leader of the 1956 Women's March, Dr Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. Williams-De Bruyn joined thousands of women, who marched to the Union Buildings against apartheid's pass laws. Her legacy was honoured by the University of South Africa and the South African Council of Churches. The event brought together veterans of the struggle and a new generation being called on to carry the baton forward. Bonolo Maribe filed this report

The Johannesburg Roads Agency says Phase Two of the Lilian Ngoyi Street rehabilitation project is now 72 percent complete. The Agency says the reopening deadline has been moved from the end of August to October 31st, 2026. The Agency has also said the project was delayed by cash-flow constraints, but work has resumed following the finalisation of payments. The remaining work includes road paving, stormwater infrastructure, sidewalks, street lighting and bus stops.  Zweli Nyathi is JRA CEO

Former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya says political interference in policing dates back to at least 2009. Testifying before the Madlanga Commission, Lebeya says he was assigned in August 2009 to investigate murder and matters involving Crime Intelligence. He says his investigation later found that family members of Crime Intelligence personnel had allegedly been irregularly appointed within the covert component. Lebeya says his position as Hawks Divisional Commissioner was abolished in January 2011, although he was not told why. Lebeya also told the Commission that political interference created confusion over command structures within the SAPS. He cited a 2011 incident involving Lieutenant Generals being instructed to attend a funeral by then-Acting National Commissioner Major General Mkwanazi.

Dr Godfrey Lebeya told the Madlanga Commission that criminals often pretend to be Hawks or other officials to trick people into paying money. Some even used his own photos and forged a warrant against the Deputy President. Lebeya also explained how he meets informants like Malcolm X and warned that knowing someone does not protect them if they break the law.

Former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya has told the Madlanga Commission that his relationship with Paul O’Sullivan was cordial until he refused to disclose details of the Phala Phala investigation. Lebeya says O’Sullivan contacted him for an update on the case while in Chauke’s presence. He says he could not understand O’Sullivan’s interest in details of a matter under the Directorate’s purview.

Former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya told the Madlanga Commission he never knew or spoke to Katiso Molefe. He said Molefe did not ask him to send Hawks members to stop a police operation at his house in Sandton. Lebeya blamed poor planning and weak leadership for many police units arriving at the same scene. He said he only asked two managers to check claims that people were pretending to be Hawks members acting on his orders.

Former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya says attempts were made to remove him from his position through complaints he believes were driven by people with ulterior motives. Testifying before the Madlanga Commission, Lebeya cited complaints by self-proclaimed whistleblower Patricia Mashale, who challenged his appointment and retirement status. He also described an incident involving his wife being recommended for promotion, saying he recused himself and referred the matter to another senior officer.

Former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya has told the Madlanga Commission that knowing a police official does not protect anyone who breaks the law. He says the Hawks have arrested informants who later claimed police knew about their crimes. Lebeya also says that on 6 December 2024, Malcolm X warned him that people were pretending to act on his behalf during a Political Killings Task Team operation at Katiso “KT” Molefe’s home.
