Eskom is set to increase its electricity tariff on Monday by a whooping 12.74 per cent across the board. This was after the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) approved the electricity tariff hike for the 2024/25 financial year in January 2023. The  South African Federation of Trade Unions has lambasted that this increase is above the inflation rate and will ultimately widen energy poverty. Condolences continue to pour in for the deceased of the crash that happened on the Mamatlakala mountain pass between Mokopane and Marken last night. The National Assembly has approved the Expropriation Bill as amended by the National Council of Provinces, by 205 votes to 108. Although not yet signed into law, the bill would allow for, in certain instances, 'nil compensation.' Head of Policy Reseach at the Institute of Race Relations, Dr Anthea Jeffrey has however sounded the alarm on the Bill insisting that the bill's provisions are at odds with the common law and pose a great risk to the country's economic well being. A shooting incident in KwaZulu-Natal's uMhlathuze Local Municipality has left two bodyguards dead. Police say the incident happened this morning at the municipal head office in Richards Bay. It has been reported that the two shot each other while officials were inside the building. For more on this we are joined on the line by uMhlathuze Local Municipality spokesperson, Bongani Gina.

The Gauteng Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission has today updated the public on some of the investigations it has recently conducted. The Commission has also received a memorandum from protesting members of the South African Communist Party (SACP) in Gauteng. They are today picketing outside the Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg, against comments made by the DA leader John Steenhuisen who referred to Gauteng's crime wardens, as drunkards who were wearing a uniform from PEP stores. The comments sparked public outrage, with some labelling his remarks as racially insensitive. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Zamantungwa Mbeki, SAHRC Gauteng Provincial Manager.

The African National Congress argued, through its legal counsel, that the Electoral Court does not have the jurisdiction to hear the matter relating to the infringement of the Trade Mark Act. Advocate Tshidiso Ramogale relied on the Electoral Commission Act in assessing the jurisdiction that the Electoral Court and the IEC have. The ANC has hauled the UmkhontoWesizwe party to court accusing it of being in violation of the Trade Marks Act by using the name and logo similar to that of the disbanded UmkhontoWesizwe military wing. Ramogale argues that the Durban High Court is the appropriate forum to ventilate the matter. This is an extract of what the court heard today.

The Information Regulator of South Africa (IRSA) says it plans to finalise its probe into the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) investigation before the national elections on 29 May 2024. Speaking to members of the media on Tuesday morning, the Information Regulator's Executive for the Protection of Personal Information, Advocate Tshepo Boikanyo revealed that the investigation is at an advanced stage and a preliminary report on the probe will be released soon. This follows an incident earlier this month which involved the unauthorised disclosure of political party candidate lists on social media. The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande has confirmed the de-registering of four Educor Colleges. The department cancelled the registrations of Damelin, City-Varsity, Lyceum College and ICESA City Campus, for failure to submit annual financial reports, among other things. Nzimande addressed the media on the matter a short while ago.

Its been jubilation and ululations outside the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg as Mkhonto weSizwe Party supporters celebrate the news that the party will be allowed to contest in the upcoming May 29 national and provincial elections. This comes after the Electoral Court dismissed an application by the African National Congress to have the party, led by former president Jacob Zuma, removed from the ballot.
