The Road Accident Fund has highlighted a huge number of beneficiaries being defrauded and deprived of their compensations. RAF spokesperson McIntosh Polela, says there have been almost a thousand reported cases of fraud during the 2023/24 Financial Year, with 417 cases referred to the South African Police Service. A recent case involves a 33-year old Vaal resident, who was swindled out of an approximately two million Rand settlement. SABC reporter, Monique Lewis has more.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have launched a manhunt for two suspects who escaped the gun battle in Mariannhill, west of Durban, this morning. Police shot and killed nine suspects wanted in connection with a series of violent crimes. It is alleged they had forced the owner out the property and had occupied nearby homes as well terrorised residents. Former President and Mkhonto weSizwe Party leader, Jacob Zuma has until today to appeal an earlier decision by the Electoral Committee barring him from running as a candidate in the May 29 polls. The decision was taken following the public candidate list inspection process which took place last week. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC News senior politics reporter, Busi Chimombe. 

 Reactions continue to pour in following the decision by the High Court in Pretoria to strike off the roll an urgent application by the speaker of parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula aimed at interdicting her possible arrest. Mapisa-Nqakula, who was Minister of Defence from 2012 to 2021, is accused of receiving millions of rands in cash as bribes from a military contractor during her turnure. She has since denied any wrongdoing and approached the courts, demanding that she be allowed to have her legal representative present in case of her arrest. Meanwhile, African National Congress First Deputy General Secretary, Nomvula Mokonyane had this to say while on a campaign trail in Soweto, Johannesburg today.

Commissioner, Edward Kieswetter has emphasised that various tax compliance measures were invoked to collect revenue from non-compliant taxpayers in the 2023-24 financial year. Speaking during the announcement of the Preliminary Revenue Results for the 2023/24 financial year, Kieswetter said the service managed to collect R190-million in undeclared taxes from high net-worth individuals, while R850-million collected from lifestyle audits. 

Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan continues to face huge criticism for threatening to take legal action against Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises. This comes after the committee that oversees his department, adopted a report which recommends that the failed SAA-Takatso deal be handed over to the Special Investigating Unit for further probing. The Democratic Alliance says Gordhan should not use public funds to fight parliament's processes while the EFF has questioned what Gordhan seeks to hide by attempting to block an investigation into the deal. The South African government is continuing to assist the government of Botswana to finalise processes of the repatriation of the 45 bodies of the people who perished in the bus crash in Limpopo. An 8-year old girl survived and is still receiving medical treatment in a hospital in Limpopo. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC International News Editor, Sophie Mokoena.

The South African Council of Churches has expressed its condolences to the families of the 45 people who lost their lives in a horrific bus accident in Limpopo at the begining of the Eater long weekend. Acting General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches, Rev Mzwandile Molo says the church grieves with those who lost their loved ones in the crash.

Motorists heading back to Gauteng after the long weekend are advised to expect increased traffic volumes on major routes, including the N1 and N3 highways. This as, holiday makers make their way back at the end of the Easter weekend. More than 2,000 vehicles per hour are expected to be heading towards Gauteng from tomorrow morning.
