Former anti-apartheid activist and British Labour Lord Peter Hain says that peace talks are the only way forward in the war between Hamas and Israel. Last week, South Africa launched a case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, alleging that Israel's military campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide. In the 84-page suit, South Africa details evidence of brutality being perpetrated in Gaza and asks the Court which resolves interstate disputes, to urgently declare that Israel has breached its responsibilities under international law since the 7th of October last year. As South Africa grapples with acts of criminality, residents of the Limpopo province have reported a high prevalence of mob justice incidents. This as members of some communities across the province continue to show little or no faith in the country's justice system.  According to police statistics, South Africa recorded 588 cases of mob justice between January and March 2023. These include murder, attempted murder, arson and assault. SABC reporter, Baatseba Mabowa has more.

As South Africans enjoy the last few days of the holiday season, power utility, Eskom kicked off the new year with the announcement of the return of stages two and three electricity rolling blackouts. The power utility has cited a number of reasons for the decision including intensified maintenance, the loss of six generating units, as well as three- generating units not returning online as had been anticipated. This comes just days after Eskom announced the synchronisation of a new unit at the Kusile power station. Energy Expert, Chris Yelland says the return of load shedding following an extended period of uninterrupted power supply, is a huge blow for the public. He spoke to Elvis Presslin.

The outcome of the 2024 general election is being touted to hold the same importance as South Africa's first democratic election in 1994.  Throughout 2023, speculation ran rife as to whether any party will get an outright majority.  An array of surveys predicted a drop of below 50% for the ruling African National Congress. The predictions may provide opposition parties the opportunity to explore new and innovative ways to topple the once unassailable ANC. Zoleka Qodashe has more.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs says a total of 39 people have died since October as floods continue to devastate the province. The department earlier urged residents to avoid crossing flooded rivers after the remains of two people were recovered from a vehicle that was swept away by flood water on New Year's eve. As South Africans mourn the death of legendary photographer, Dr Peter Magubane, he has been described as a fearless story teller, whose commitment earned him international acclaim, numerous awards and recognition. Magubane passed away on Monday at the age of 91. He rose to prominence by covering pivotal political events in South Africa such as the June 16 student uprisings in 1976. For a look at Magubane life and times of the late activist, Elvis Presslin spoke to former Sowetan journalist and anti-Apartheid activist, Thami Mazwai.

Around 20 000 Minstrel performers are expected to take to the streets of Cape Town today for the annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Street Parade, as they light up the streets in their colourful outfits. The parade is expected to attract over 80 000 spectators along Darling Street, the Grand Parade, Adderley Street and into the Bo-Kaap. The year 2023 saw the Life Esidimeni Inquest conclude its hearings into the deaths of 144 mental health patients, with the families of the deceased asking the High Court in Pretoria to find former Gauteng Health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu liable for the deaths of the loved ones.  The families blame Mahlangu for the controversial relocation from the Life Esidimeni facilities and its subsequent closure in June 2016. Most patients ended up in ill equipped and unlicensed NGO's across Gauteng. Phanuel Shuma reports.

Democratic Republic of Congo President, Felix Tshisekedi has secured over 70% of the country's recent vote, according to the DRC's election commission. The preliminary results of the December 20 election were announced in Kinshasa amid demands from the opposition and some civil society groups for the vote to be rerun due to massive logistical problems that put the validity of the outcome into question. Opposition candidates claim the problems were part of a deliberate plan to allow the results to be rigged in favor of Tshisekedi. While supporters of Tshisekedi took to the streets yesterday to celebrate the results, opponents demonstrated against them. The elections had over 40% of voter turnout, with around 18 million people voting. Now to get more on this matter we are joined on the line by SABC correspondent, Chris Ocamringa.
