The South African Association of Meat Importers and Exporters has called for the urgent removal of trade tariffs on all poultry products. The association fears that the increase in chicken prices will hurt poorer households. Chicken is the most affordable source of protein for the majority of households in South Africa. But, with the ever increasing prices, chicken is slowly becoming a luxury.
However, the South African Poultry Association (Sapa) has rejected calls made to remove all trade tariffs on chicken imports and suspend any new tariff measures in the industry for the next three years. We spoke to SAPA General Manager Izaak Breitenbach
