Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality says it has met with Eskom, to discuss the municipality's debt to the power utility. Last month, Eskom attached the bank account of the municipality which owes it more than R5-billion. South Africa has recorded just over 5,000 new infections over the past 24-hour cycle, which brought the number of known cases since March to over 516-thousand. The national death toll stand at 8, 539 after 173 more people have died. Power Utility Eskom has taken radical steps to recover its money from owing municipalities. Eskom has recently attached the bank account of Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality in the Free State. The Municipality's account is now frozen, funds in the account will be directly transferred to Eskom. Eskom says this is to help them recover a portion of the R5.3 billion owed by the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality, and this step is a result of the repeated failures by the municipality to adhere to its payment obligations to Eskom.We spoke to Eskom's Group Chief Executive- Andre de Ruyter.

Police Minister Bheki Cele released the crime statistics for the last financial year (1/04/2019 - 31/03/2020) "virtually" from Pretoria earlier this morning. Cele says cash-in-transit heists, bank and house robberies have decreased, while violent crimes including murder, rape and robbery increased.
