A Grade two learner found with a firearm and live ammunition at Dalpark Primary School on Gauteng's East Rand is receiving counselling for behavioural change. It is believed that the learner brought the gun to school with the intention of harming another learner. Various incidents of bullying have been reported in the media over the past few weeks, including a learner dying from alleged bullying and a primary school learner injecting other learners with used needles. Education department MEC in Gauteng Panyaza Lesufi says educators should not turn a blind eye to bullying.

Statistician General - Pali Lehohla has warned that South Africa is facing a disaster because the economic prospects of 90 percent of the population have not improved. Speaking at a Higher Education Conference in Durban, Lehohla said the biggest driver of poverty in the country is lack of education and barriers to black people completing tertiary qualification.

Lehohla also says chances of a black student graduating are now less than in the 1970's when seen as a ratio of the population. Academics at the conference are taking stock of where tertiary education finds itself two years after the Fees Must Fall movement rocked the country. Dries Liebenberg reports .
