National Treasury is now under pressure to pay 13 billion rand bailout packages in order to save two ailing parastatals. The South African Airways (SAA) is expected to get 10 billion, while the SABC is looking at getting 3 billion from Tresury. This comes as reports have emerged that the extension of SAA Board Chairperson, Dudu Myeni's contarct to November may be irregular. The Standing Committee on Public Accounts - SCPOA - in Parliamnet is this morning expected to visit SASSA Headquaters to exercise its oversight role over the social security agency. Social Development Minister, Bathabile Dlamini, last week wrote a letter to National Assembly Speaker, Baleka Mbete complaining that Sassa should not be interrogated by Scopa over the new social grant payment contract as it is still at a sensitive stage. In the letter, Dlamini also complained that there is duplication of oversight between Scopa, chaired by Themba Godi, and the portfolio committee on social development, chaired by Rose Capa. As South Africa celebrates Heritage month - one of Sophiatown's well-known residents - Can Themba - who passed away in 1968 is also being remembered. Can - as he was affectionately known - was a teacher, writer and journalist who valued literacy and education.
